HDMI monitor not detected [SOLVED]

Post by jeffz »

I switched to Linux Mint Cinnamon yesterday and my monitor isn't detecting my laptop.
I'm new to this OS and I'm unsure of how to fix the issue.

Welcome to the forum, jeffz.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

Please also review the topic Tips for Troubleshooting Graphics Issues (including external monitors not working) which is a sticky at the top of the Graphics Cards & Monitors forum.

That link gives you the information to confirm no Nvida driver is loaded.

Device-1: NVIDIA GA107M [GeForce RTX 3050 Mobile] vendor: Dell driver: N/A pcie: speed: 8 GT/s
lanes: 8 bus-ID: 01:00.0 chip-ID: 10de:25a2 class-ID: 0300

Only the onboard GPU driver which controls the laptop screen (and a DP port) is loaded. The Nvidia GPU is likely what controls the HDMI port. We have to get it loaded to confirm that.

Device-2: AMD Cezanne vendor: Dell driver: amdgpu v: kernel pcie: speed: 8 GT/s lanes: 16

The Nvidia proprietary graphics drivers are available in Driver Manager. Did you install a proprietary driver?

There are two steps with a proprietary Nvidia driver. The first step is using Driver Manager to install the driver. The second step is having the driver load at boot time. If you have secure boot enabled and you did not create keys (MOK) or you installed the wrong driver, then the driver will not load at boot time.

Is secure boot enabled? You can check by running the following in a terminal

Code: Select all

mokutil --sb-state
With an Nvidia driver installed, please provide the output of

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
and enclose the results in code tags as described in this tutorial: How to use code display tags on forums.linuxmint.com

We can check to make sure the correct driver is loaded and it is loaded properly. With regards to secure boot, you can either disable it in the BIOS/UEFI so the proprietary driver loads or you can create keys (MOK) so the driver is trusted. (Directions are in the other link and I can also copy them here if you have questions).

You will want to make sure you are running in On-demand mode in the nvidia-prime-applet (in the lower right of your screen when an Nvidia driver is loaded).

I did install a proprietary Nvidia driver when I setup the OS. The driver manager says that it is in use.

I ran the command to check secure boot is enabled and it says that it is.

Here's the results of the other command you gave me:

I turned on on-demand mode in the Nvidia settings but, how exactly do I disable secure boot in BIOS and how can I create keys?

Yes, that package list looks like everything is installed.

You do not need to do both. You either disable secure boot in the BIOS/UEFI or you create keys.

I don't know the specifics of the BIOS/UEFI of your laptop to be able to give you steps to disable secure boot. For many laptops, there is a setting named "secure boot" and the options are "enable" or "disable" and it is as simple as changing that setting. Other laptops have different set-ups and may require changing other options.

If you cannot or do not want to do that, here are instructions to create the keys (Enroll MOK)

Please see the How can I do non-automated signing of drivers? section. Do not do the last sentence.

I am presuming the key process was started so when you run

Code: Select all

sudo update-secureboot-policy --enroll-key
you will be prompted for a password. You will need to use that password the next time you boot so the key is enrolled, but that will be the only time you need the password.

If you have questions, let us know.

I turned off secure boot and it works now!
Thank you so much for helping me, I appreciate it.

I just have one question, is the taskbar being non-existent on the external monitor normal and how can I change that?

Good to hear. Please go to your first post in this topic, click the pencil icon, and add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the title and submit the revised post so others know you are no longer seeking help on this issue.

I presume you mean the panel. I believe it shows on the monitor you have set as your primary monitor, but I'm not positive. You should be able to set the external monitor as the Primary in the Display app.

That would be a question to search for in the Desktop: Cinnamon forum if I didn't answer it correctly. Post there if you cannot find an answer with searches.
