Second monitor goes black on chosing the highest resolution

Post by DYNAMITE_007 »

TL;DR primary monitor is 1920x1080 23" and secondary monitor is 1680x1050 22". Secondary monitor only works on resolutions below its maximum i.e. 1280x1024 etc.

Hello, I had continuous BSOD on my fairly recent win11 install and decided that it was finally time to go full linux after I used linux mint on my laptop for last 2 days. From the first boot my second screen (with lower resolution of 1680x1050) didn't give display, I tried changing primary monitor, changing display from extend to mirror but the second monitor just wont give display. I lurked on forums to find a similar problem but I didn't see something which would exactly match my problem and I came across the command -xrandr and it finally clicked that its probably something to do with the resolution. So, I lowered the resolution on my second monitor and it works. How do I make my secondary monitor to give display at its peak resolution of 1680x1050 which was previously working in windows? I also like the taskbar (Panel) on my secondary monitor. Does linux allow taskbar to be shared on both screens?

Is it because the frequency of second one is slightly lower may be? It did work on windows so I hope there is a solution to this

This is not the Mesa version which comes with Linux Mint. It appear you added an "almost stable" PPA.

Code: Select all

  Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ernstp-mesarc-jammy.list

Did you take a Timeshift snapshot before installing that so you can cleanly remove it from your system so you can properly test the operating system drivers before you start modifying things?

AMD drivers are in the kernel and load automatically when you boot the system. You should not be adding other drivers and complicating the troubleshooting process.

When reading xrandr output, *= current resolution and += preferred resolution.

Code: Select all

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3600 x 1080, maximum 16384 x 16384
DisplayPort-0 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 510mm x 287mm

I think I added this for installing corectrl but the problem that I am having with the resolution was from the inception of my linux install so I find it hard to understand how this could be the issue. Anyway I have still rolled-back using timeshift and now my inxi -G looks like this

Code: Select all

Graphics:
Device-1: AMD Ellesmere [Radeon RX 470/480/570/570X/580/580X/590]
    driver: amdgpu v: kernel
  Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 1.21.1.4 driver: X: loaded: amdgpu,ati
    unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa gpu: amdgpu resolution: 1: 1920x1080~60Hz
    2: 1280x1024~75Hz
OpenGL: renderer: AMD Radeon RX 570 Series (polaris10 LLVM 15.0.7 DRM
    3.42 5.15.0-101-generic)
One more thing that I find strange is that none of the 16:10 or 16:9 aspect ratio resolutions work on the second monitor despite highest working resolution of 1280x1024 (5:4) being listed above 1440x900 (16:10), 1280x800 (16:10) and 1280x720 (16:9). Is this the right pattern I am seeing or am I just overthinking this. Please list any more information that you need so I can provide it all together

I don't understand this statement. The xrandr output shows the second monitor currently running at

Code: Select all

1680x1050 59.95*+
which is most definitely higher than 1280x1024.

xrandr lists resolutions not ratios. Please explain where (in what app) you are looking for these resolutions. Saying one resolutions is "listed above" has no meaning to me when the xrandr output is listed in descending order.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I have given the xrandr output of my display when both monitors were at their highest resolutions i.e 1920x1080 and 1680x1050 respectively and the second one would just keep turn off and on and going into safe mode without giving any display. When I uploaded the xrandr, I hadn't yet figured out that the lower resolution actually works for the second monitor. The best working resolution that I have found is 1920x1080 and 1280x1024.

Again I should have been more clearer here. 1280x1024 is the highest resolution that would actually give me display. What I want is my monitor to display at 1680x1050 but that does not work so for me, 1280x1024 is now technically the highest resolution.
SMG wrote: Sun Mar 24, 2024 11:02 am xrandr lists resolutions not ratios. Please explain where (in what app) you are looking for these resolutions. Saying one resolutions is "listed above" has no meaning to me when the xrandr output is listed in descending order.
Here, I am reffering to the display setting in the menu (inside settings) which lets me choose the resolution by drop-down menu. Let me explain it in a better way by drawing how the drop-down looks like. aspect ratios are next to the resolution, I am not calculating them myself:

Code: Select all

1680x1050 (16:10) - this is max resolution for the second monitor which goes black on this resolutiion and would keep turn on and off
1280x1024 (5:4) - this is the highest working resolution
1440x900 (16:10) - despite being listing lower in the list than 1280x1024, it does not work
1280x800 (16:10) - same as 1440x900, this resolution also does not work. You can see that it has same horizontal resolution as 1280x1024 but as soon as the vertical resolution is lowered to make the aspect ratio rectangular, the display goes black.
1280x720 (16:9) - this also doesn't work
Any squared resolution (5:4 or 4:3 aspect ratio) on the monitor works but as soon as I choose 16:10 or 16:9 aspect ratio, the display wont turn on even when the resolution is lower than 1280x1024 which is currently working for me.

Unfortunately, I wont be able to provide any screenshots as i messed up my linux install while mounting drives to fix other problems which I have been having with steam. I have gone back to win11 for my PC right now and am sticking to linux mint only on my laptop where I can get used to it. Thank you for all the help.

What does "safe mode" mean? Does it say that on the screen? I'm not familiar with that.

The xrandr output shows the 1680x1050 is the preferred output for the second monitor. Might this be a cable issue? Or a setting on the monitor?

Okay. Lately there have been some unusual things happening with Polaris GPUs, but I don't recall the type of issue you have described.

When my monitor is connected via DP and does not get display from the GPU, it gives a warning and counts for 5 mins before turning itself off. I think its a measure to protect against burn in, who knows. It would never, under normal circumstances, keep warning me about going into safe mode, turn on and off again itself. I think the monitor is trying to give out the display but 1680x1050 but it somehow it thinks that this resolution is out of bound.

yes, it is the preffered output and that is what I have been using all this time on windows. As soon as I installed windows the second monitor was blank but after the updates were installed the monitor works at 1680x1050. If it was a cable or settings issue, it should not have worked at 1680x1050 earlier or now but it does.

I will try out linux again once I build a new PC in the future then.

Thanks for the info. This may be one of those new energy-saving features.

I have seen others run into issues where the monitor resolution was "out-of-bounds" which often relates to a driver issue. Polaris GPUs used to be rock solid but they have now moved to "legacy" status so weird issues have been popping up.
