I have an AMD 2400G cpu and I'm not sure if the integrated graphics are what's causing the issue.
I installed an NVIDIA 4060 Ti and when I tried to boot with the HDMI plugged into the GPU I was getting a nouveau chipset error on boot.
I reconnected the HDMI for the monitor into the CPU and was able to boot after replacing quiet splash with nomodset. (Initially I couldn't even have the GPU plugged into the motherboard at all)

I've made some progress, now I'm at the point where it does have the NVIDIA drivers installed and I am able to choose NVIDIA perfromance mode in the NVIDIA X Server app under PRIME profiles.

I initially used the nouveau driver but changed to the 535 driver once I was able to.
Also upgraded the kernel to 6.5 from 5.15.
I read in a different post that I was supposed to delete the .conf file but wasn't able to find it, just the folder. (Not sure if this is causing an issue.)

Currently whenever I try to shut down and change the HDMI to the gpu it shows a DRM error and goes to a flashing black screen and I can enter tty1.

Code: Select all

[ 6.659215] fbcon: amdgpudrmfb (fb0) is primary device
The above is from the log where it was able to boot while HDMI was connected to CPU. I'll try to get logs for when it's connected to the GPU, but it's the same as above except I believe there's a third error.

Not sure how to proceed. Will try more drivers in the meanitme, after I add the third error to this post.

In case it helps:

Reason: Moved from Installation & Boot to Graphics Cards & Monitors because the issue is with an Nvidia GPU.

Welcome to the forum, drmpk.

It appears you have established the Nvidia GPU is the problem. Can you remove the Nvidia GPU and have your computer boot normally without having to use recovery mode or the nomodeset kernel parameter?

Do you know if this is the most recent BIOS/UEFI for your computer?
Machine:

Mobo: HP model: 8433 v: 11 serial: <superuser required> UEFI: AMI v: F.52
date: 11/16/2020

Do you know for sure your computer's power supply can handle a 4060 Ti?

This output does not show any ports directly connected to the Nvidia GPU. Have you checked in the BIOS/UEFI to see if there might be a setting so you can directly connect to the Nvidia GPU?

This needs cleaned ASAP. You are getting close to the point where the system will be so full that you cannot log in.

Those are often signs of hardware problems.

Don't try more drivers. Pull it out and make sure the system can boot normally without it.

Hey SMG, thanks for the reply.
Can you remove the Nvidia GPU and have your computer boot normally without having to use recovery mode or the nomodeset kernel parameter?
I'll take it out and confirm, but I was able to before I installed the gpu. I'll get back to you once I do. I assume I should switch back to quiet splash instead of nomodset to confirm.
Do you know if this is the most recent BIOS/UEFI for your computer?
Oh good catch. I just checked and there's updates from 2023 for the BIOS. They're for windows though but I assume I can still install them?
Do you know for sure your computer's power supply can handle a 4060 Ti?
I believe so, its a 400W PSU, and according to the components requirements I should have enough.
I'll try using a bigger watt PSU and confirm though.
This output does not show any ports directly connected to the Nvidia GPU. Have you checked in the BIOS/UEFI to see if there might be a setting so you can directly connect to the Nvidia GPU?
You mean like the HDMI? I cant connect anything to it and boot, so I left it unconnected.
This is the error I get when the HDMI is connected to the gpu (after the DRM errors).

Code: Select all

kvm_amd: SVM disabled (by BIOS) in MSR_VM_CR on CPU 0
In the BIOS, I saw a setting for NVIDIA VGA. I wasn't able to enable or disable it though. Should I give more info on this?
Maybe updating the BIOS will help.

dev: /dev/nvme0n1p1
I deleted 100+Gb and now there's ~180Gb free. I assume the /boot drive is fine? How much free space should I leave in general?
I helps with Nvidia issues all the time and I do not know what this means.

Yeah I think you had mentioned it in a forum post reply. It was in the context of updating the kernel and then deleting that before rebooting.
Or I might be mixing up posts since I dont see it on your guide for troubleshooting graphics issues.

I'll remove it and try booting normally without nomodset or recovery mode and get back.

Correct. nomodeset blocks the graphics driver of the onboard GPU from loading.

If you have a Windows install you can install them. I think some people have been able to use a Windows install on a usb, but I don't know what the latest tips are to get an HP BIOS/UEFI updated if one does not have a Windows install.

Each motherboard can be different as to how they handle multiple GPUs. I suggest checking the motherboard manual to see what is available for yours.

I believe kvm_amd is a type of virtual machine setting. I don't know that it would have anything to do with GPUs.

That's good. Boot drive is fine.

Generally speaking for the root partition it's best to have less than 75% full.

That is a custom file that normally does not exist in Linux Mint.
