WiFi can't connect over 5Ghz - Realtek RTL8814AU

Post by Zetha »

Hello Forum!

I just started to use Linux Mint (21.3) regularly on my main PC. I use a TP-Link Archer T9UH v1 Adapter for WiFI. Installed this drivers (https://github.com/morrownr/8814au) as the WiFi Network Adapter wasn't working out of the box. WiFi works on the 2.4Ghz band but it keeps repeteadly asking for password when trying to connect to the 5Ghz SSID. What's more weird, is that for a few days it worked and then stopped working again.

In other threads i found that people where using this for troubleshooting:

Code: Select all

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://github.com/UbuntuForums/wireless-info/raw/master/wireless-info && chmod +x wireless-info && ./wireless-info
In case you need more information.

This is what i have tried so far:
  • Disabled 11n as on other post people suggested this may cause an issue:

    Code: Select all

sudo echo "options iwlwifi 11n_disable=8" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/iwlopt.conf

  • Changed rtw_wireless_mode from /etc/modprobe.d/8814au.conf

    Code: Select all

    options 8814au rtw_drv_log_level=1 rtw_led_ctrl=1 rtw_vht_enable=1 rtw_switch_usb_mode=0 rtw_wireless_mode=64

  • Disabled IPv6 from Network Manager GUI for my WiFi.
Some other Info:
  • 5Ghz Encryption Type: WPA2-PSK-AES
Thank you in advance!

edit: Adding System Report Information.

Hi JeremyB thank you for your reply.

I tried uninstalling morrown/8814au driver and installing aircrack-ng but the problem persist (I know that i had correctly removed the former because in their configuration i changed rtw_wireless_mode=64 so i only saw 5Ghz networks, and now with aircrack-ng i can see 2.4 and 5 networks).

This are the results:

DIGIFIBRA-RKzK is my 2.4 Ghz network and DIGIFIBRA-PLUS-RKzK is the 5 Ghz one.

Can you put 5GHz on channel 124?

On the router I can only go up to channel 112. Should I try 112 instead?

I think 112 could be an improvement, run in terminal dmesg -w before trying to connect, see if there are any clues

Changed to 112 and tried to connect, but dmesg didn't show any output when trying to connect nor when prompted for a password:

Code: Select all

[ 7234.650405] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): wlx7cc2c63859fb: link becomes ready

The latest lines was me turning off/on WiFi to check if the 5Ghz network was up after making the change.

Might be worth trying to disable IPv6 in network manager settings for that connection

IPv6 disabled but it's not changing anything. dmesg still doesn't show anything when trying to connect. I also tried to forget the network and try again, but the problem persists.

Try

Code: Select all

tail -f /var/log/syslog
See if it shows something when trying to connect

This is the result from syslog after trying to connect, being prompt for a password, put the password and after some minutes be prompted again:

Re: WiFi can't connect over 5Ghz - Realtek RTL8814AU

Post by JeremyB »

Lets try

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i 's/3/2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/*
echo "options cfg80211 ieee80211_regdom=ES"|sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/cfg80211.conf
sudo iw reg set ES
Try again, if no improvement, reboot and try

I don't know if this might help, but i tried testing with another SSID on my router, without password but same 5Ghz configuration and it connected correctly. So my guess is that something related to the WPA2 authentication is failing. These are the options that appear in my router:
  • WPA2-PSK-AES
  • WPA/WPA2-PSK-TKIP/AES
  • WPA3(SAE)
  • WPA2-PSK(TKIP/AES)/WPA3(SAE)
I tried all but none worked.
