External monitor flicker every 30s when lid closed - LM 21.3 64 bit

Post by akred3 »

Hello everyone,

I bought a new laptop recently and setup the last version of LM 21.3 64 bit, with Cinnamon.
I have an external monitor that I plugged through HDMI, and it was not working.
Thanks to this post, I was able to "partially" solved the problem.

Every is running fine, except that I noticed an issue when I close my lid and I have the external monitor plugged into.
Every 30s, the screen goes black and return to normal after 5s.
It's something annoying that I don't have when the lid is open.
(I am using the mirroring feature between the 2 screens)

Here is my configuration :
Note : I noticed the same behavior when I type the command "inxi -Fxxxrz" , so I suspect something linked to graphics configuration

What does "partially solve the problem" mean? What did you do?

When you close your lid, do you turn off the laptop monitor or are you leaving it running?

The option to disable the laptop monitor is in the Display app.

If you look at the port information, the Intel graphics are currently displaying what is on the laptop screen and Intel is the primary renderer.

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel vendor: Lenovo driver: i915 v: kernel ports: active: eDP-1

empty: DP-1,DP-2,eDP-2
bus-ID: 01:00.0 chip-ID: 10de:2860 class-ID: 0300

OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel Graphics (RPL-S)
v: 4.6 Mesa 23.2.1-1ubuntu3.1~22.04.2 direct render: Yes

You likely need to either switch to using the dGPU either through Nvidia Performance mode or a setting in the BIOS/UEFI to use only the discrete GPU. I'm not sure how your laptop is wired to know which is more appropriate for your hardware.

First, thank you for your response :)
What does "partially solve the problem" mean? What did you do?
I mean that before, nothing was displayed on my external monitor and since I have setup the Nvidia driver, it's working
When you close your lid, do you turn off the laptop monitor or are you leaving it running?
No, I don't turn off laptop monitor manually when I close the lid, but it seems that this one automatically turn off (the laptop screen goes black at a certain point when the lid is closed to the keyboard)
If you look at the port information, the Intel graphics are currently displaying what is on the laptop screen and Intel is the primary renderer.
Is switching "Nvidia mode" should set the monitor with Nvidia instead of Intel ?

When you say switch to use dGPU, how I should proceed ? I went to Nvidia settings to switch to performance and see if it will solve the issue, but seems not ? Did I miss something else ?
I'm not sure how your laptop is wired to know which is more appropriate for your hardware.
It's a simple HDMI cable, but I guess you were referring to something else in term of hardware no ?

Thank you

I have a setting in the Power Management app to turn off the screen when it is inactive for a certain period of time. Is that what you mean is happening?

There is an eDP-2 port option for the Nvidia GPU in the inxi output. I don't know if Nvidia-performance mode activates that or switching in the BIOS/UEFI activates it.

You mean you used the nvidia-prime-applet which took you to Nvidia settings and you switched modes?

I'm referring to the internal wiring of the GPU to the port on the laptop (the port into which you plug the HDMI cable).

Yes exactly

I will have a look at the BIOS/UEFI to check if there is anything I can review and keep you posted

EDIT : Event after switching to Discrete Graphics in BIOS, he issue still the same
Note : And the mirroiring feature stop work if I click on the button, the settings close automatically

The inxi information you posted seems to indicate that it is not showing as being off. :?

Have you posted yet on the Lenovo forum about the issues you are having to see if others are having problems too?

Was there a particular reason you switched to the 545 driver? That's a new features branch driver and not a production branch.

Just to confirm the lid settings are ok, can you execute this command?

Code: Select all

gsettings list-recursively org.cinnamon.settings-daemon.plugins.power | grep lid

And does the Display app show that it is turned off?
The inxi information you posted seems to indicate that it is not showing as being off. :?
The display app is showing only one screen because I select the screen mirroring option.

Still I thought that the inxi information was correct with screen off no ?

Have you posted yet on the Lenovo forum about the issues you are having to see if others are having problems too?
I checked and didn't found post related to that :(.
Just to clarify, when I say "flickering", it's that the screen goes black every 30s, stay 5s in black screen, then wake up. It's like the monitor stop receiving the signal, and then receive the signal again for the 1st time (I see on top the "HDMI" overlay on my monitor appearing, just like it was turned on)
Note : I checked with Windows 11 and it's not happening
Was there a particular reason you switched to the 545 driver? That's a new features branch driver and not a production branch.
No particular reason, I switched to the most recent to check if it will solve the issue, but not :/
Should I switch back the recommended one ?
Just to confirm the lid settings are ok, can you execute this command?
Yes, here is the output
org.cinnamon.settings-daemon.plugins.power inhibit-lid-switch true
org.cinnamon.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-ac-action 'nothing'
org.cinnamon.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-battery-action 'suspend'
org.cinnamon.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-suspend-with-external-monitor false

I don't understand why one would mirror a screen and then close the laptop lid so you can't see the screen. If you are mirroring the screens would you not want to see both screens?

inxi information doesn't always correctly record which screens are on/off or active/empty.

Does Lenovo provide support for Linux-based distros on this computer or do they only provide support for Windows?

The 545 driver is the new features/experimental branch. It is not a production branch driver.

Good question, no sense to use mirrorring :) ,
Still even if I don't use the mirorring feature, if I disable or not the laptop screen through the display app or not (because I want to close the lid), the issue persist in both case.

They don't provide Linux support on this model series apparently

So even if the screen is disabled the problem happens. :( Okay.

I did a quick search through the Intel bugs and was not able to find anything like your issue.

The fact it does not happen when the lid is open may suggest this is a hardware-related issue (perhaps a way a cable is bent/powered when the lid is closed).

I do not have any other ideas.

I don't think it's hardware related as I said it's not happening with Windows 11 ;(
Anyway, thank you for help

This is a long shot, but I read here that someone fixed a sort of external screen flicker by changing the display frequency.
I don't expect much of it but it may be worth a try.

Thanks vimes666, seems like to be the same issue as me.
I checked the display app and even if the frequency is set as 60hz, I suspect also that the display frequency change when the lid is closed
