Cinnamon Desktop Icons Shift to The Left

Post by LikeyTheCinnamon »

Hello. I've been using Linux Mint for some time now. I'm currently using Linux Mint 21.2 Cinnamon edition with Cinnamon version 5.8.4 on my desktop computer. I typically save a lot of files to my desktop for easy access. Each time I shutdown my computer and then power it back on and login to my Cinnamon desktop, the files that are saved to the desktop have shifted to the left. The text has shifted to the left and the file icons have shifted to the left. They are no longer in alignment. Shouldn't the icons stay in alignment and not shift? This has been happening for quite a long time. The below is a screenshot of my monitor layout settings. Any ideas on how to stop this file/icon shifting would be great. Thanks.

Hello LikeyTheCinnamon welcome to the Forum.
Please share your system info by going to:
Menu/System Reports/System Information/click "Copy"
and pasting it here.
(You can use the command inxi -Fxxxmprz on the Terminal.)

Icons can shift when there is a resolution change. I've heard this can happen with multi-monitor setups, or if you have custom xrandr scripts. It might also be caused by fractional scaling, if you are using that.

It might also be just a bug in Cinnamon.

Below is the System Information. I do have dual monitors but I haven't changed the resolution, I don't use any xrandr scripts, and I don't use fractional scaling. If it's a bug in Cinnamon, wow I wish they would fix it.

@RollyShed - I lined up the desktop icons and text, made the change you suggested, shutdown the computer. I started the computer this morning and logged into my desktop and the desktop icons and text still shifted to the left. Turning the Enable Window Tiling and Snapping to OFF did not work.

Although I normally don't like much more drastic options, ( and do a Timeshift snapshot creation ...FIRST...)..reinstalling Cinnamon desktop itself may be an option here.

@motoryzen - Thanks for the response. I have reinstalled Linux Mint at least three times. It continues to happen. I don't know, maybe it is a Cinnamon bug.

I was searching around for a way to update Cinnamon to the latest version seeing I already have it installed. I couldn't find anything to try.

So, a couple of months have gone by now and I decided to try Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) 6 Faye. I installed it on a wiped SSD with no issues. My LMDE 6 has Cinnamon version 6.0.4. Interestingly, desktop icon shifting is still occurring. Has anyone else has seen this phenomenon? If you have, were you able to solve the issue? I guess it could be a Cinnamon bug.

The text has shifted to the left and the file icons have shifted to the left.
I saw something similar to this on LM 19.3 Cin. There would be a vertical line of 8 or more icons all lined up, and then who knows what would results in 3 contiguous icons in that row would be moved to the right about 1/4 of the space between the icons. I would just drag them back and they would stay corrected for quite a while. Then 3 others would move over and I would drag them back.

Eventually it never happened again in LM 19.3 Cin. And it never happen in the LM 20.3 Cin I now run. So the problem just went away.

Yes, that's it. Vertically placed icons/files are shifting; it could be horizontally placed icons as well though. Very annoying indeed. Unfortunately, the issue for me hasn't gone away. :x

The other thing I always do when doing an installation is -
Right click on the desktop
Go down to Customize
Auto arrange OFF

@RollyShed - If you were to take a look at the screenshot in my original post, you'll see that Auto-arrange is off. And still desktop icon shifting. Ugh!!!

Ooops, sorry, missed looking at that.
I have icons spread across the desktop, two monitors, messy layout and everything stays where it has been put.
And No, not seen icons move on any other installation either so an odd one.

Only one word there that would worry me "Nvidia".

@RollyShed - It could be an NVIDIA issue. I never thought of that. Unfortunately, I don't have a computer that doesn't have an NVIDIA video card to test.

Hmm. I wonder if the Mint developers monitor this forum to look for bugs?

Not too much I would say.
They probably knew about this bug years ago and tried their best to squash it.
