No GPU on Gnome Wayland

Post by shim80 »

Hello,
I did a fresh install of Linux Mint 21.3 on my desktop PC.
I decided to move from Cinnamon do Gnome desktop, so I installed it through terminal, and rebooted into Gnome Wayland in the login menu.
Since that, it's look like my GPU drivers switched to llvmpipe instead of Nvidia:

Code: Select all

~$ glxinfo|egrep "OpenGL vendor|OpenGL renderer"
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa
OpenGL renderer string: llvmpipe (LLVM 15.0.7, 256 bits)

Code: Select all

~$ glxinfo | grep "vendor"
server glx vendor string: SGI
client glx vendor string: Mesa Project and SGI
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa

Code: Select all

$ inxi -Gazy
Graphics:
  Device-1: NVIDIA GA102 [GeForce RTX 3080] driver: nvidia v: 545.29.06
    alternate: nvidiafb,nouveau,nvidia_drm pcie: gen: 1 speed: 2.5 GT/s
    lanes: 16 link-max: gen: 4 speed: 16 GT/s ports: active: none off: DP-3
    empty: DP-1,DP-2,HDMI-A-1 bus-ID: 06:00.0 chip-ID: 10de:2206
    class-ID: 0300
  Display: wayland server: X.org v: 1.21.1.4 with: Xwayland v: 22.1.1
    compositor: gnome-shell v: 42.9 driver: X: loaded: nvidia
    unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,nouveau,vesa gpu: nvidia display-ID: 0
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 15.0.7 256 bits)
    v: 4.5 Mesa 23.2.1-1ubuntu3.1~22.04.2 direct render: Yes
I have somes games running through Steam Proton, but none of them worked (crash at launch with error)
I removed nvidia drivers, and reinstalled it again, but nothing changed (I'm using nvidia-driver-545)
I'm pretty sure I hadn´t this issue on Cinnamon...

Edit: I confirm that my GPU is not recognized at all. When I launch Blender, everything is ultra slow and laggy. In setting, it say "no compatible GPU found"

My specs:
CPU: Ryzen 5600X
GPU: Nvidi RTX 3080
RAM: 32GB
SSD: 1TB

Welcome to the Linux Mint forum, shim80.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware

It looks like you may have more than just the default OpenGL and Nvidia OpenGL packages installed.

No, I only have Wayland option: Gnome, Gnome Classic, Cinnamon Wayland (experimental) and Ubuntu (I don´t know where this one came from). But I remember that the GPU worked well on Cinnamon X11

And you did that fully knowing that GNOME is not a supported desktop for Linux Mint?

Did you take a Timeshift snapshot before you installed whatever GNOME packages you installed?

I say "whatever GNOME packages you installed" because it's my understanding that GNOME 42 (you have 42.9 installed) is available for use with either X11 or Wayland so I don't know why you would only get a Wayland option.

Here is the GNOME wiki for NVIDIA Graphics with the GNOME Wayland session where it seems to indicate to me what you are seeing is to be expected? Not really sure because that may not be up-to-date. You may want to search the GNOME desktop forum.

A Cinnamon install should have Cinnamon, Cinnamon Wayland (experimental), and Cinnamon (software rendering). I don't know what may have happened to your install. There are always risks of overlap problems happening when installing multiple DEs like you have done.
