Show minimized windows in tray?

Post by Ramesez »

There used to be an option that could be found on the welcome screen to change the minimized windows from an icon with a line under it to the full size with text. 21.3 does not appear to have this, at least it's not where it was. Does anyone know if it can be done? It's very annoying the way it is by default..

Hi Ramesez.
Is it what you looking for?
Open your settings and run "Applets"
Search for "window-list" in the search bar.
Select it and click the + button.

No, that's not it. I will probably have to provide a screenshot for you to understand what I mean..

That's been removed since Mint 21 I think.

Not sure why they would do that.. I've always hated the 'modern' layout.

devara was right after all. That is what I wanted, however, the window lists are on the right for some reason. Is there a way to set it to the left, where it should be?

Yes, easy.
right-click on panel and turn-on the edit mode.
Drag the applet into the left area (highlighted red).

If you fail, make sure you drop the item in the area (the highlighted area will be extended).

Alternatively, you can use grouped-window-list instead. It will show the number of opened window of the same App instead of duplicate it on the panel (it looks more clean to me).

Remember, you can always make them to show/hide the App's name. Just right-click on the applet > Applet Preferences > Setting > go to tab Panel > Button Label.

Yes it is. You just need to remove the grouped window list and use the normal window list instead. That's what the "traditional" layout used. If I remember correctly it used that plus the panel-launchers applet.

It took several attempts to successfully drag it, but it worked in the end. Thank you.

Yeah, I realized that.
I have grouped window list active + window list and it seems to be functioning as I want.

I believe it was using some version of MATE panel for traditional. So it was duplicating in Cinnamon what's available in another desktop. So I can understand from developers' perspective why it was removed. As others pointed out, you can remove Grouped Window List to get similar functionality.

That's not really true. That traditional layout button was just a shortcut. You can still build that EXACT same layout. All the same applets are still there, just not the ones used as default. Cinnamon used that layout for years. If I remember correctly, the right side of the panel had the menu, show desktop applet, panel launchers applet, and the regular(not grouped) window list applet.
