[SOLVED] Linux Mint 22 Xfce VM fail on first login

Post by ajgringo619 »

I've run into this problem with (3) different systems
  • Linux Mint 22 (upgraded from 21.3
  • Linux Mint 22 (clean install)
  • Xubuntu 24.04 (clean install)
In a nutshell, when logging in the first time, whether with auto-login or manual login, Xorg crashes, sending me back to the login window. The next login always works. I've tried using QXL (my default) and VirtIO, both having the same results. None of this happens with LM 21.3 or Xubuntu 22.04, nor do any of my other Xfce-based systems (Fedora 40/Rawhide, Debian 12/Sid, Arch, openSUSE Tumbleweed).

The main error I'm seeing in the ~/.xsession-errors log is

Code: Select all

xfwm4-WARNING **: 17:12:11.798: Unsupported GL renderer (llvmpipe (LLVM 17.0.6, 256 bits))
I've seen references to this, but only with real GPUs. Has anyone else run into this, either in QEMU or Virtualbox? It doesn't happen on VMware, but that software is just too buggy for my taste.

Happened to me. It was caused by my installing the sound codecs during installation. I also had the problem when I installed the codecs after installing Finally, I skipped the codec installation and the VM just works. If I recall correctly, the cause isn't actually the codecs, but something pulled in when the codecs are installed (cannot remember what). It was reported as a bug.

Installing SMPlayer, after install, also installs codecs, but without the boot-loop problem.

Thank you so much for the tip! Just finished up an install, did a full update, and no Xorg crashes. Now I need to investigate further as to what specific package(s) are causing this.

It's really strange that this is only affecting Ubuntu-based VMs. The only Ubuntu-based distro that uses Xfce that doesn't suffer this bug is Rhino Linux (although it uses a highly specialized version of Xfce).
