[solved] Mint 22 fresh install - cinnamon crashing daily at same time

Post by greeves »

I just did a fresh installation of Mint 22 which is running great with no issues but one. So far cinnamon is crashing daily at basically the same time:

Sat 2024-08-31 19:58:57 CDT 2233 /usr/bin/cinnamon
Fri 2024-08-30 19:58:58 CDT 2124 /usr/bin/cinnamon

I have only one cron entry that copies my Timeshift local backup to a NAS but it runs at 07:00. It isn't a huge issue for me - just curious if anyone has seen the same behavior.

Thanks for the reply Steve. I read the topic and while he had some cinnamon crashes - he also had lots of other crashes.

Also my BIOS is up to date.

As far as loading the OEM version of Mint, if this gets to bothering me too much I might try that. For now I'm going to be sitting in front of my system at 7:58 pm and maybe I'll get a clue as to what is going on. :D

Tonight was the first time I have had an opportunity to be on my system at 19:58 to see what is happening. I believe the culprit is a Firefox window that is running my Google calendar. I have a repeating daily alarm that occurs at 20:00 hours. Google will open my Firefox window from the toolbar to post a popup window notifying me of the alarm on the calendar web page. Interesting that cinnamon did not crash when I was "active" on the session - I was running top in a terminal window to watch the processes. I don't run a screensaver, I normally just power off my monitor when I leave my desk.

Just to confirm, I have closed the calendar web page to see if that stops the cinnamon crash tomorrow. Stay tuned gremlin fans.

For the first time since installing Mint 22 cinnamon hasn't crashed at 17:59. I don't know if the problem lies with cinnamon or Firefox however I used this Firefox webpage with Mint 21 from the day it was installed. Not a big deal - the alarm of course is really for my phone and I can live without it on my desktop. As far as I'm concerned this is solved.
