New LM22 Desktop immediately wakes from suspension

Post by iodachi »

I've freshly installed Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon as the only operating system on a new desktop, but any time I try to suspend it immediately turns back on to the user selection screen. This is the case whether I use the UI, power button, or the 'systemctl suspend' command. 'pm-suspend' also turns back on immediately, though already logged in.

Wake-on-LAN is disabled, and it still has this problem even after I've unplugged all external hardware and cords (except power cord) from the tower, and with WI-FI and Bluetooth turned off.

I've tried the solutions other people have had for this problem and none of them worked, but I've gathered the information helpers have requested on those posts. I'm both new to Linux and the forum, so if there's anything I'm missing let me know and I'll try to get that information as well.

Re: New LM22 Desktop immediately wakes from suspension

Welcome to the Mint forums with an excellent example
of 'how to get help' (in pink banner).
kudos

Easy thing to try is create a new user in Users and Groups.
Log out and log back in as the new user. Try it there.
New users get fresh config files.
Everything in life was difficult before it became easy.

Thank you, I've given that a try and had the same problem on both new standard and admin users.

Additionally, I discovered I can't use 'systemctl suspend' after logging out of one user and logging into another, as it says I'm still logged into the previous. If I swap multiple times, it repeats the message multiple times as well like so:

Code: Select all

personal@DESKTOP-LMC24:~$ systemctl suspend
User test is logged in on tty7.
User testadmin is logged in on tty7.
User test is logged in on tty7.
User testadmin is logged in on tty7.
Please retry operation after closing inhibitors and logging out other users.
Alternatively, ignore inhibitors and users with 'systemctl suspend -i'.
In that I alternated between "test" and "testadmin" twice before logging into "personal" (using Log Out every time, not Switch User). I'm still able to suspend through the GUI or with 'sudo pm-suspend' as usual.

This problem is probably not related to the primary suspension issue, but I wanted to add it here just in case!

If this is the correct link, the latest non-beta BIOS/UEFI is version FB2. I recommend updating.

The data you posted shows your system has the phantom monitor issue which may be contributing to this problem.

From the Nvidia Graphics Troubleshooting section of the Tips for Troubleshooting Graphics Issues Rev. 1 (including external monitors not working) which is a sticky topic at the top of the Graphics Cards & Monitors forum:
SMG wrote: Fri Jul 19, 2024 6:18 pmSpecial Note: There is currently a bug with Nvidia drivers on the 6.8 kernel Phantom "Unknown Display" shown in Settings after installing the Nvidia driver . That bug is causing problems on the Display app and possibly other places as well. It's an upstream Ubuntu problem. Until a fix is released, a possible workaround is:
  • Take a Timeshift snapshot in case this does not work for you or you have typos which cause problems.
  • Add the below line to /lib/udev/rules.d/71-u-d-c-gpu-detection.rules (correction to the line made on 07 Aug 2024 - it was missing a " at the end)

    Code: Select all

    ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="module", KERNEL=="nvidia_drm", TEST=="/sys/devices/platform/simple-framebuffer.0/drm/card0", RUN+="/bin/rm /dev/dri/card0"
Step by step instructions to make that change are in this post.

I have some additional ideas if those two do not work.

I have done both your recommendations and unfortunately the problem persists (including users not logging out correctly). I also noticed the option to suspend from the user select screen and tried that as well, though as expected there was no difference there.

Re: New LM22 Desktop immediately wakes from suspension

I am not aware that users logging out correctly have anything to do with waking from suspend. The user-logging-out-issue is likely a separate, unrelated issue. At one time I did hear of a Cinnamon bug related to that, but I don't know if it has been resolved yet.

You have a dual-GPU system. Let's make sure your system has the latest amdgpu linux-firmware. Here are instructions to update your system with the latest AMD driver linux-firmware.
  • Take a Timeshift snapshot. If this change causes problems, a snapshot will be the best way to reverse the change.
  • Please go to this page and download the linux-firmware-main.tar.gz firmware package into your Downloads directory. Make sure there is still a red rectangle with HEAD in it and a green rectangle with main in it. If not, stop and I will get you updated information.
  • Right-click the downloaded file and select "Extract here". That will create a directory named linux-firmware-main.
  • Navigate to the ~/Downloads/linux-firmware-main/amdgpu/ folder and open a terminal in that directory and run the following lines one at a time.

    Code: Select all

    sudo cp -u * /lib/firmware/amdgpu/
    sudo update-initramfs -u -k all
  • Reboot the computer.
If you have any questions on the instructions, just ask.

The dmesg info you posted--when did you run that?

I ran it just before making the topic page. I'm pretty sure it was after a systemctl suspend command rather than a GUI suspend, but it definitely wasn't a result of pm-suspend. I can't remember if I did anything after suspending and the computer auto-waking that would add to the dmesg.

Here's an updated one if you need it. I ran this one after updating the firmware and rebooting, then running systemctl suspend a couple times:

Code: Select all

Re: New LM22 Desktop immediately wakes from suspension

iodachi wrote: Sat Sep 07, 2024 10:34 am I'm pretty sure it was after a systemctl suspend command rather than a GUI suspend, but it definitely wasn't a result of pm-suspend. I can't remember if I did anything after suspending and the computer auto-waking that would add to the dmesg.
Okay. It looks similar to what you just posted.

The below type of lines make me suspect a motherboard setting. Have you gone through the manual/settings to see if there might be anything related to sleep or specifying a particular operating system?

Code: Select all

The manual doesn't say anything about sleep, but I did find that under Product Specifications - Operating System it only lists support for Windows 10 and 11. I thought I read somewhere that Linux would work fine on it, but I must have misremembered an illegitimate source as a legitimate one. Do you think it could be a matter of running the Linux OS on an incompatible motherboard?

Some people have said they have settings for "other OSes" in the BIOS/UEFI, but I didn't see that either.

I did a quick search on the forum for B650 AORUS ELITE AX and see others are running it, but I don't know if they are suspending.

I know at least one other person who had an AMD system that was immediately waking and the issue turned out to be powering of usb ports/peripherals. They made a change in their BIOS/UEFI settings to get it to work, but I don't recall if I saw that option for your motherboard.

Do you know if suspend works properly with Windows on your particular motherboard? That might be something you want to check if it is still under warranty. You may be able to run Windows from a usb drive to test it.

Also, I think Gigabyte has a forum. Maybe you could check there to see if others have this issue and resolved it.
