[SOLVED] Unable to change display refresh rate in laptop

Post by Careteja »

Hello. First post here.
Just started with LMDE as my first distro, to gradually get away from windows, and I've been having some trouble with quite a few things related to graphics, I think they are all intertwined, but I'll start with this one and maybe it will help me untangle the situation.

My laptop is a Legion y540, i7-9750H, GTX 1660 TI

inxi -Fxxxrz output:

Objective: Being able to change the refresh rate from 144Hz to 60Hz to increase battery. Something I was able to do in windows (though I had to use CRU to make the option available).
Problem: When I go to Display Settings (desktop>>right click>>display settings) and I choose from the dropdown menu any of the other available refresh rates [120.02Hz | 119.94Hz | 59.96Hz | 59.93Hz] and click "apply" the number in the box goes back to 144Hz immediately, at the same time that the "Cancel changes/Keep new configuration" window appears. Then if I choose "keep new" nothing happens :( .

If I change my mux switch setting to dedicated graphics then NVIDIA X Server Settings shows a refresh rate parameter, but 144 is the only option.

I've searched trough the forums and I've found loads of threads with the same, or very similar problems, but as far as I could see, none of the causes were applicable to my case :/. Any help appreciated

edit: This also happens within a live session.

Also, if I tell xrandr to change the refresh rate it doesn't work:

Code: Select all

~$ xrandr -r 60.01
Rate 60.01 Hz not available for this size
And my xorg.conf file is located at /usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg-video-intel
and looks like this:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
	Identifier "Intel"
	Driver "intel"
	Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

Why are you trying to force the use of the old "intel" display driver? That is not the correct driver for your system.

Your system information shows the correct modesetting driver being used for Intel.

Those are not the refresh rates showing in xrandr. You need to let us know which MUX setting you are using when running the commands you are posting because the options will change for the different graphics drivers.

Your xrandr output indicates there is already a 60Hz option. That means you should not be forcing one using xrandr.

Why are you trying to force the use of the old "intel" display driver? That is not the correct driver for your system.
Turns out that as the absolute noob I am, I thought that there was a xorg.conf by default, so I just typed "xorg.conf" in the files app and went to that intel xorg file, but that file is not even in any of the directories that Xorg looks for apparently, so it doesn't do anything.
Those are not the refresh rates showing in xrandr. You need to let us know which MUX setting you are using when running the commands you are posting because the options will change for the different graphics drivers.
Regarding that, all of the otputs I showed are with the Hybrid setting from the UEFI, that is the one i'll be interested in running most of the time (optimus).
Your xrandr output indicates there is already a 60Hz option. That means you should not be forcing one using xrandr.
I thought that xrandr -r would set the refresh rate to the closest one available in the modes. My bad.

Edit:
This is what I meant to do xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode 1920x1080 --rate 60
but it failed too giving this message: xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed
Also the mismatching refresh rates in display settings are exactly double the ones they should be according to xrandr.

It is likely you were reading old information. Did you remove the changes you made? It's actually best to take Timeshift snapshots before making changes. That makes it easier to revert your system back to its prior state.

If you have Hybrid Graphics set in the UEFI, then the Intel GPU is used to display what is on the screen regardless of which GPU renders the graphics. (Rendering the graphics and then displaying the graphics are two different steps.)

If you want the most battery savings, you would select Intel-Powersave mode and not On-Demand mode or Nvidia-Performance mode in the nvidia-prime-applet (which should be in your panel/system tray).

I don't know what you mean by "mismatching refresh rates".

I didn't change anything about that xorg.conf file, just searched for it to include its content in the post. But you can ignore it now, I just posted thinking it would be helpful.
I don't know what you mean by "mismatching refresh rates".
I mean this, that you had already noticed before:
Those are not the refresh rates showing in xrandr.
The ones that are different than the modes in xrandr. ==> Image
If you want the most battery savings, you would select Intel-Powersave mode and not On-Demand mode or Nvidia-Performance mode in the nvidia-prime-applet (which should be in your panel/system tray).
About that, the applet never worked for me, only showed Err in the system tray, and something about drivers not being installed when hovering over it. I should open other thread for that I guess. Maybe I should do a clean install, though this one has less than two weeks :? .
Anyways thank you very much for the time and effort at understanding my situation.

Please provide the output of

Code: Select all

xrandr --verbose

If you want the most battery savings, you would select Intel-Powersave mode and not On-Demand mode or Nvidia-Performance mode in the nvidia-prime-applet (which should be in your panel/system tray).
About that, the applet never worked for me, only showed Err in the system tray, and something about drivers not being installed when hovering over it.
My error. I forgot you were running LMDE. The applet I mentioned only works with Linux Mint based on Ubuntu.

The applet you are referencing is likely the one which is a Cinnamon spice that was made for older versions of Cinnamon. That one usually does give an Err message.

Nvidia drivers and switching has to be set up and switched manually in LMDE. That is not the case in Linux Mint. It's also possible the refresh rates might work in Linux Mint 22 because it is using a newer kernel that would have newer Intel drivers. You can backport a newer kernel for LMDE 6, but I don't know off-hand if that will help.

The applet you are referencing is likely the one which is a Cinnamon spice that was made for older versions of Cinnamon. That one usually does give an Err message.
Ohh. So that explains why I couldn't get it running.

How should I set up the drivers?
I understand you are recommending me to install Mint 22, and I will do that if nothing else works, but I would like to try getting it to work with what I have now. I think it could be useful for me to understand or experience a little how this works (or doesn't). So, given that my install doesn't have anything very important right now, I want to give it a try.
And by switching manually you mean going to UEFI and switching the "Hybrid/Dedicated" MUX?

Please review Nvidia Optimus for your options.

With regards to Linux Mint 22, go to Tips for Troubleshooting Graphics Issues Rev. 1 (including external monitors not working) and go to the Nvidia Graphics Troubleshooting section and click the little hand to see the additional information. At the end of that section are screenshots explaining the nvidia-prime-applet and the On-demand options available in Ubuntu-based Linux Mint.

However, as I have already mentioned, in the current state the Intel graphics control the laptop screen. It is possible to backport newer kernels into LMDE 6. I don't know what the latest kernel is, but that may help. Take a Timeshift snapshot before switching to make it easier to switch back to the 6.1 kernel if you decide you want to do that.

Code: Select all

sudo apt install -t bookworm-backports linux-image-amd64

No, that is not what I mean although that is an option to switch to just Nvidia. Read through the link to get more information.

Hey, thank you so much for your help.

I'm starting to think that I must have followed some fix online that made non EDID modes appear as available when I had just installed. I'll restore to default using timeshift.

I'm getting a little lost into what we are considering to be the source of the issue here.
I had already read through that wiki and, how I understand it, everything listed there is as it should, I have the nvidia-driver, so as LMDE is based in Debian 12, NVIDIA PRIME Render Offload is on by default, so it's normal (or at least common) that the iGPU is in charge of the screen.
Please correct me if that is wrong.
Then, what I'm trying to achieve is basically manage to get a different refresh rate while using the iGPU to control the screen. Is this simply not possible?

Based on the EDID information, you are trying to get a refresh rate that Windows gave you and not one that necessarily the Intel graphics driver gave you based on the physical specs for the laptop panel.

It is possible you may need a newer kernel to get a newer Intel driver in order to get the different refresh rates. However, without testing, I don't know if that is possible. LMDE 6 runs on Debian 12 bookworm which does not have the latest drivers available. It runs an older kernel with an older graphics stack. People install it because it is "stable". It is not a front-runner with support for the latest hardware and drivers. You likely had the latest drivers installed when running on Windows.

Regarding the drivers age, I was already doing the adjustments in windows since 2020.
Just did a reinstall of LMDE because my laptop hung on the rebooting process of restoring a timeshift save, and everything is still the same.
Anyways, I've concluded that this minor refresh rate inconvenience shouldn't be taking this much effort given that I don't even know if it really saved that much battery in comparison with other adjustments like undervolting.
I still don't understand why display settings and xrandr show more refresh options that the panel doesn't give in EDID. Maybe in the future I'll try again out of curiosity.
I will probably be looking for other ways to lessen the battery impact, because with all the tweaking I had made in windows I could get up to 5 hours out of the battery. But now, since installing LMDE I've only gotten around 1h50 with light use, wich is almost the same that I got in default windows .
So, thank you very much for all the help.
Should I mark this as solved?

You're welcome. If you are no longer seeking help on this issue, you can mark it [SOLVED] so others know you are no longer seeking help on it. You can always change it later (within the six month period the topic is active) if you wish to revisit the issue.
