Why aren't all ubuntu mirrors listed in software sources?
I just noticed fetching from the ubuntu (base) repository was significantly slower than my ubuntu install. I updated to the fastest available mirror from software sources, but the listed one was still pathetically slow. Then I manually went to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu.sources and copied over the mirror, pasting it in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list and voila, my updates were again fast. The mirror I used ( http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu ) isn't listed in the software sources application for the base. I am confused, why? Why aren't all sources listed so that the user gets the best experience?

Re: Why aren't all ubuntu mirrors listed in software sources?
Linux Mint / Ubuntu mirrors are hosted independently, and are subject to their compliance with various kinds of reliability and security criteria. Some mirrors might lag behind the primary repositories or might not be synchronized properly due to various reasons like network issues, maintenance schedules, etc., or simply provide outdated software.
It's highly recommended to stick to mirrors "approved" by the Linux Mint team to avoid reliability and security issues. If you're looking for a mirror in India, mirrors.nextgen.com works well for me.

The mirrors listed are often determined by load-balancing mechanisms. Ubuntu uses a default server, which can be slower during peak times. If a particular mirror experiences high traffic or maintenance, it might not be selected by the automatic fastest mirror option.
