problem graphics card

Post by Khaye »

Good afternoon guys,

I have a problem, I installed on my PC the proprietary drivers nvidia but unfortunately as soon as I try to start the game comes out this screen:

https://ibb.co/5LSpCTc
while if I try to install the open source drivers, the game starts but crashes on the initial loading (remains still there for an indefinite time)

p.s I tried with windows and the game starts quietly

The game is New World (I have already verified that it is playable by the protondb site)

Hello,
What Proton version are you using? With your current driver (470) you can only use legacy proton versions which is Proton 7 and older... if 7 didn't work, try 5.13...
Also according to ProtonDB, this game is slower on Linux compared to Windows.

Good morning and thanks for the reply

I was using the experimental proton version or version 9

Now I tried with version 7 and 5, but after a few seconds from startup I receive the following error:

I see. maybe try removing the game prefix located here (to see hidden folders such as ".steam", press Ctrl + H):
/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1063730
Please go to this directory and remove this "1063730" folder. Then again use the same Proton version that gave you this error and see what happens.

If this did not fix the issue, please use this command in the Launch Options of the game:

Code: Select all

gamemoderun WINE_CPU_TOPOLOGY=4:0,1,2,3 %command%
If still failed:

Code: Select all

gamemoderun WINE_CPU_TOPOLOGY=2:0,1 %command%

As MMO New World - you mean that game, right? - receives frequent updates. Compatibility I bet requires installing the newest version(s) of Steam Proton which cannot work with nvidia 470.x driver as Teadrinker explained.

Older and/or games that are not updated any longer might be playable.

In any event uninstall Steam and re-install it from here.

I think it'd be better if you tried my tutorial on this:
viewtopic.php?t=390919

Potentially, your Mint installation might not be set up properly (This may be for 21, but most of the techniques are the same for Mint 22).

That's right, I'm talking about Amazon's New World MMO.

I performed both the reinstallation and the guide given to me by Neigdoig, but I still get the same problem

but I started it directly from steam, should I start it from lutris?

For New World to work on Linux and Steam you have to install easy anti cheat, this you do inside steam. Even with this installed New World ran poorly on a much more powerful computer that i have than yours so you should not expect much.

Did that mitigate some of the issue, Khaye?

Your GPU is likely too slow to play given the minimum requirements... 'NVIDIA 1060 3GB'. your GPU is likely quite a bit slower than that as the minimum required GPU is noticeably better than mine (1050 Ti 4GB).

also, even if we assume you can use DirectX11 on the game, which means DXVK on Linux, the current DXVK version (v2.x series) requires at least 510 driver or newer. but the older DXVK 1.10.3 works with v470 driver. source = https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/wiki/Driver-support

bottom line... realistically I would not expect to be able to play that game on your computer.

p.s. I got a similar motherboard as the OP (ASUS P8H61-M LX Plus) but I got a NVIDIA 1050 Ti 4GB GPU and a similar CPU (i5-3550).
MainPC: i5-3550 (undervolted by -0.120v (CPU runs 12c cooler) /w stock i3-2120 hs/fan) | 1050 Ti 4GB | 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR3 1600Mhz RAM | Backups: AMD E-300 CPU (8GB RAM) / Athlon X2 3600+ CPU (@2.3GHz@1.35v) (4GB RAM) | All /w Mint 21.x-Xfce
