Update to 22 and now Laptop does not wake up after suspend

Post by svanschu »

Hi,
I have here an Lenovo T560 I had running with Linux Mint for years and the last known working version was Linux Mint 21.3. Now I recently updated to Linux Mint 22 and changed the SSD and now after lid is closed or manually send to suspend the laptop does no wake up.

I can press the power button as often as I want, but it keeps flashing like it is in suspend and keep beeing in suspend.
I need a long press on Power to switch it off and boot again.

Welcome to the forum, svanschu.

Did you do an in-place upgrade from LM21.3 or did you do a fresh install of LM22 on the new SSD?

If you did a fresh install on the new SSD, have you tested the old drive with LM21.3 to see if it still works?

Hi,

1. I have done a dd from the old 512GB (LM21.3) to a new 1TB SSD
2. changed the internal SSD to the 1TB one. Bootet, seemd everything ok.
3. Extended the partition to full size. Seemd everything ok
4. Done the update to LM22

I fact I didn't yet tested the old SSD again. It is an hour drive to that Laptop, so I wanted to totally think that through.

If you can create an install usb of LM22, you can also try testing a live session of LM22 instead of testing your old SSD.

The idea is to see if maybe something in the upgrade caused an issue.

Moderator note: deltav's issue can now be found here Update to 22 and now Dell Inspiron 15 352 does not wake up after suspend because their hardware is different. OP has Intel while deltav has AMD Ryzen.

Hi SMG,
sorry for the wait. I was now able to get a hand on that machine again. And I have done some tests.

Waik after suspend not working
- new SSD with updated LM 22
- USB stcik with fresh LM 22

Waik after suspend working
- old SSD with LM 21.3
- USB stick with fresh LM 21.3

So it is indeed something with LM22 fresh or updated, so that the waik after suspend does not work anymore.

What I noticed as well. The F1 Key for muting has a LED. If you mute the system with that key the LED turns on. If you go on standby that LED turns of with LM21.3 where waik up works and stays on with LM22 where waik up does not work.

Even if you turn off the system that LED stays on with LM22 and you can't turn back on the notebook. Even after a long wait the LED is still on and it drains the batterie. You need to long press the power button till that LED turns off. Then you can turn back on the notebook.

Somehow LM22 does not work very well with that hardware.

Svanchu hello,

It's a long shot (because I'm a noob), but I have been having this and similar problems with my newly installed Mint 22 system hanging/freezing. I have seen SMG's posts elsewhere, and her posts kind of got me on track to a solution that has been working for me for several hours now. I'm sorry, I can't point those posts out to you because I encountered them somewhere in my five day marathon to get my laptop back up and running again -- but SMG helped.

I discovered that "fwupd" and a system daemon kept trying to update firmware. After much reading, and admittedly stupid command line fooling around, I found a post by Pjotr in linux Mint Forums.
This worked for me:

viewtopic.php?t=395196

BTW, I saw some of SMG's posts while chasing down a mount problem with NTFS drives in Mint 22, and also in a Mint 20.x forum about missing dependencies and libc6 (GLIB and 2.34 ???). All those forums were locked/solved, so...

Thank you SMG, and thank you Pjotr!

I don't know if it will help with this issue, but if this is the correct link, it indicates the latest BIOS/UEFI is version 1.45.

I have seen where a laptop worked on one version of Linux Mint, but a BIOS/UEFI update was needed for it to work properly on a newer version.
