Post by theoThePerson »

I just got a new laptop and the webcam doesn't work. I have a I looked everywhere for 5 hours and tried to install different drivers and kernels but nothing made me able to use my webcam.

Thanks in advance.

Instead of the results of neofetch, can you provide system information as stated on "how to get help".

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Click the Copy button and then paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware. No need to use code tags because System Information copy button already inserts the tags when you paste.

I see you have Kernel: 6.8.0-1013-oem. Any particular reason you're using that one?

Re: Built in webcam not working on Acer Swift 3 SF314-71

Post by theoThePerson »

I originally had the default kernel but the webcam did not work so I did some reserch and found that that other kernel is supposed to be better for webcams, but it too did not work. There is no real reason that I still have that kernel now should I go back to the default kernel? I think that it is a driver issue. I tried installing drivers in the driver manager but that also did not seem to fix the webcam.

From several articles and forums regarding the Acer Swift 3 models, the fingerprint reader and webcam are a problem for being recognized by Linux.

The type used is some kind of IPU6, which is similar to what some chromebooks use. They too have problems with the webcam being recognized.

I don't think you're going to find a solution for that Acer.

That is what I feared. Thanks for your help anyway. I will try to find a easy way to install the IPU6 drivers and I will post here if I end up finding a solution.

As for the kernel, in my opinion, I'd go back to the 6.8 generic series.

I also had an issue with my built-in webcam with Mint 22 XFCE edition which I spent 2hrs trying to fix, and wrote this poem about it:

I tried to fix the fecker, starting with an online webcam checker.
I hit all the forums and stackoverflow, but no go.
I hopped from thread to thread till it hurt my head.
I tried fix after fix to see if anything sticks.
I asked ChatGPT and even held my breath and counted to twenty.
I almost gave up, until I looked up...
And saw by the lens a privacy shutter, and I said "oh you little..."

So yeah, that's worth checking ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There is no privacy shutter the the problem is that it is not getting recognized by the system because it doesn't have the proper drivers and after lots of looking there is no diver for it.

Thanks for your suggestion though.

I meant that more for others who may land on this thread, who like me end up jumping from thread to thread trying to solve this.
I do highly recommend asking ChatGPT however, it's impressively good at solving this kind of problem.

I have a Acer Swift 3 and an Acer Aspire laptops and the webcams work on them. Install Guvcview from the Software manager. Also please post the results of the following command..

Code: Select all
