Hey guys: I'm running Mint 22 Cinnamon. I made the mistake of choosing "Wayland (experimental)" from the log-in screen; now Mint boots to a black screen with a frozen mouse pointer.
I tried the widely-published suggestion of booting to a command line and editing /etc/gdm3/custom.conf (or /etc/gdm/custom.conf), but neither directory exists on my system.
I can't believe I'm the only one having this problem, and amazed I can't find any other suggestions for fixing it. Ideas? Thanks!

Re: Wayland crashes Mint; undo?
GDM is the GNOME Display Manager; Cinnamon uses LightDM. Can you post a link of what you were told to try? Also, when you reboot the system, are you not given the option to switch back to the default?
Re: Wayland crashes Mint; undo?
You appear to have mistakenly assumed that Wayland is something which gets installed instead of it being a protocol that is coded differently for each particular desktop environment. Cinnamon does not use GDM3 so whatever you found is not applicable.
I moved your topic to the Cinnamon on Wayland forum. Please check WAYLAND - read this first!.
It sounds like you have automatic login enabled?

Re: Wayland crashes Mint; undo?
All I know is that it was a choice on the logon screen.
I was hoping someone could just give me a command to use to switch back, but you're saying it's complicated than that? (If the Wayland option is this unstable, maybe it's not a good idea to offer it to everyone right up front?) Okay, I'll go to the other page.SMG wrote: ⤴Mon Nov 25, 2024 10:35 pm I moved your topic to the Cinnamon on Wayland forum. Please check WAYLAND - read this first!.
Yep!
When I reboot, I see the usual GRUB options: Mint, Mint with extra options, Windows, BIOS.ajgringo619 wrote: ⤴Mon Nov 25, 2024 10:17 pm GDM is the GNOME Display Manager; Cinnamon uses LightDM. Anyway, I'll go to the other page, thanks.
Re: Wayland crashes Mint; undo?
As this involved a booting problem, the "Installation and Boot" section seemed most relevant, but whatever you say!
I used the solution there to remove auto-login, then rebooted and was able to reselect Cinnamon from the menu. Thanks!SMG wrote: ⤴Mon Nov 25, 2024 10:35 pm I moved your topic to the Cinnamon on Wayland forum. Please check WAYLAND - read this first!.
I want to thank you guys for being so clever (more clever than me, at least!). I'd assumed Wayland was preventing me from even reaching the log-in screen. But the problem was, I'd set my system to auto-log me in (without password), as I'm the only one here who's around the PC—so it was sending me right to my nonexistent desktop. (I guess you can't really call it a "desktop" if there's nothing there, though.)
That's why I was also thinking, "Geez—if this regularly happens to people who choose the experimental Wayland, why isn't it all over the forum?"
Once again, the quick-thinking Mint Forum saves the day. Cheers!
Re: Wayland crashes Mint; undo?
The Wayland option is not the default and it specifically says "Experimental". Please follow the Linux Mint Blog to keep updated on changes with Linux Mint and Wayland.
Experimental features are not part of normal support. That is why we have a special forum for Wayland. In the future should Wayland become a standard supported option, then your question would go in Installation & Boot.
It's not what others have been experiencing and I'm surprised you ended up with a black screen. What type of graphics does your computer have?
