Greetings all:
I've just installed Mint8 KDE CE after a couple of years on Kubuntu Hardy with KDE3.5--and everything's changed!
I have a Plustek parallel port scanner that I've managed to get working, thanks to command-line commands and .conf file editing.
I've checked the forums here and the fix for root-only seems to apply to usb scanners only. I've come across some posts about parallel port scanners, but they're not recent, and I'm loath to try anything in case it's no longer valid. (I've already hosed my internet connection and a couple of apps, and had to reinstall).
In Hardy, I just had to add myself to the scanner group, but I see there is no longer a scanner group. Could someone please take me to the next step so I can easily use Xsane through Gimp and OO?

Re: Yet another Xsane only works as root problem
Sorry no one has replied earlier. No expert on scanners but have found a couple of posts that may help if you haven't already seen them. See post #12 in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1145906&page=2 and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1337731. You may also want to try this
Add yourself to the group 'lp', then log out & in again:
sudo usermod -a -G lp $USER
[Edit] your original post and add [SOLVED] once your question is resolved.

remoulder, we've got to stop meeting like this
I did the sudo usermod -a -G lp myusername trick and it worked! I stll get a permission denied message, but then Xsane loads and scans anyway. And (more important) the images are mine, not root's.
I've been doing some research on my own and read about changing permissions on the port: sudo chown -R myusername /dev/parport0 but apparently that'll last only until the next reboot. I haven't tried it, but document it here FWIW, in case nothing else works for others with the problem.
Thanks.
