Touchpad left-click not working on EeePC 900

Post by Canard blanc »

Would appreciate some help.

Have Mint 8 installed on an Asus 900 EeePC.

Is Fn F8 supposed to toggle the Touchpad on or off?
If so, when doing so, nothing happens.

Also, the left-click button of the Touchpad does not work.

Tried inxi -F, but do not see anything related to the Touchpad.

The dmesg is long, and does not appear to have any info about it either. Is there a way to get dmesg just with the Touchpad info?

This EeePC had Windows XP installed on it, but I did not use the Touchpad with that OS.
Only tried to use it recently with Mint 8,

Any USB mouse works fine...

How does one check to see if the Touchpad driver is installed?

If you have any ideas as to what to try, they are welcomed.

:sigh:

should I point out how cumbersome it is when you open multiple topics for the same issue? ...you just make it tougher for anybody to try to help you.

I would continue, but you've already indicated (in your original topic, which I've ignored by your request) that you don't want my help.

Booted from an SD card with EEEbuntu, and the same situation prevails:

Fn F8 does not toggle the Touchpad on or off.
The left-click button of the Touchpad does not work.

It does not appear to be a Mint 8 issue...

Have no clue as to what to do next.

Any new minds with ideas?

Thanks for the help!!

Since
It does not appear to be a Mint 8 issue..
How about the users manual?
http://www.gatzet.com/asus-eee-pc-900-user-manual.html

Or, check the EEE PC blog
http://eeepc.net/

Thanks, mick55.

Had checked the manual, but, it addresses issues for the original Windows XP which was installed when the EeePC was bought.

Mint is running now (much faster) since XP and the 16GB SSD did not fare well (very s-l-o-w).

When the PC was purchased, I remember checking everything out, and do not recall any malfunctions.

It works fine with a USB mouse, but every now and then it is not convenient to use the mouse.

Do you know how to look for the Touchpad driver using the Terminal?

Run this command in a terminal

Code: Select all

xinput list
If one of the lines mentions a touchpad (or maybe "Synaptics" or "ALPS"),
your touchpad has been detected. Post the output here for analysis.

Also run this command in a terminal and post the output here for analysis.

Code: Select all

dmesg
thanks

[ 1.126297] input: Macintosh mouse button emulation as /devices/virtual/input/input4
I could be wrong, and I'm aware that you certainly don't want my opinion, but someone else may come along and point out that the typical, standard Macintosh mouse has but a single button on it.

...and, hopefully that'll happen soon.

mick55,

After posting the reports you requested and seeing the Elantech entry for the Touchpad, did some more Googling.

Installed tpconfig:
sudo apt-get install tpconfig

Then ran:
sudo tpconfig -i (last letter is not an L, but the first letter in the word 'input')

Got the following results:
aaflac@aaflac-laptop ~ $ sudo tpconfig -i
[sudo] password for aaflac:
Found Synaptics Touchpad.
Firmware: 8.96 (multiple-byte mode).
Sensor type: unknown (0).
Geometry: rectangular/landscape/up.
Packets: absolute, 80 packets per second.
Corner taps disabled; no tap gestures.
Edge motion: none.
Z threshold: 6 of 7.
2 button mode; corner tap is right button click.

Found a post where it was recommended that one place a finger on the corner of the touchpad surface, and then click on the left button. Did this, and all of a sudden the left button is working as it should!! Also plugged in a USB mouse, and it still works!

Would you believe?? :D

BTW, Fn F8 is not going to toggle the Touchpad on and off. On this particular EeePC it deals with sound off: F8, and sound on: F9. That is fine.

Re: Touchpad left-click not working on EeePC 900

Post by fbsduser »

The "macintosh mouse" thing is actually the software that allows you to emulate the middle mouse button using the left and right ones. Despite the name. This software works in all the platforms linux supports.

Thanks for the info, fbsduser!

It did not seem to be the problem, but I am no expert.

Would the 'middle mouse button', using the left and right Touchpad buttons, allow scrolling, perhaps?

Now you have me thinking...

How would one configure the middle mouse button?
It could probably do more than scroll.
