how to get the .inf file

That depends. If it is a "self unpacking zip" it's just to unpack it, but you mean a "real" exe I suppose. It is possible to back engineer the code but that's a bit besides normal practise.
If you have windows or wine installed, installing the exe and then recover the inf is one way.

Open the Terminal and type:

cabextract filename.exe

Shouldn't that work?

If you give more info about the notebook and wireless card I might be able to find the .inf or instructions to install that card.

If you have XP on the lappy with wifi working the inf file is there in the inf forlder of Windows

I would try what Red-e-Made suggested.

You can try unzip or cabextract to see if they manage to open and decompress the EXE. The inf should be in there.
