I am trying to watch an video file using VLC but I can only hear the sound. There is no image just a black screen. I tried with wmv, avi and mp4 files, and none of them worked.
I can watch them fine using Gnome MPlayer and Totem.
Can someone help me?

Yes I can help you.
Stick with GNOME MPlayer and Totem (what's working for you).

Re: VLC with sound but no image
I've tested VLC with an .avi file and that seemed to work fine.
Video might be disabled?
Right click where it should be -> Video -> Video Track -> Track 1

Re: VLC with sound but no image
I find out what was causing this problem.
I had set Gnome-Mplayer video output to XV and somehow this was causing the problem.
I set Gnome-Mplayer video output to X11 and VLC is working fine know.
