Update Problem

Post by How-old! »

The Update Manager is listing a whole bunch of files this week but most of them fail to download? Anyone having the same problem? Is there something else I should be doing/not doing?
Is there a specific d/l for installing Iron to this version of the distro?

Could you post an error message to give us something to go on. Which group of files are failing to download? Are they from Mint repositories, Ubuntu repositories, PPAs, or other third party repositories?

There is the possibility that it is related to the Ubuntu release this week and servers are busy. If that is the problem you can go to the Software Sources application under the Administration menu and try a mirror server. The other option is to wait, like they say "time cures all ills." Or as we were told in vet school, "all bleeding eventually stops."

It seems that there servers could be temporarily down. I could not connect just now.

BUT It may be that installation of some application has also corrupted your sources list. Each of the urls you pasted has a path like http://archive.removed/ubuntu/dists/isadora-removed/rest-of-path Since you are going to an Ubuntu directory tree I would have expected the isadora to have actually been lucid. I am on LMDE at the moment and do not have removed in my sources list, so I cannot check on an Isadora distribution.

Thanks for that, doc. Update manager has default settings for v9.
Strangely, this morning, the missing files auto-downloaded after a week of failure. Could it be that we prompted them to put a shilling in the gas meter?!

I got a pleasant chuckle from that. I'm not English, and would never thought to have said it—the bit about the gas meter, that is, not the bit about being non-English, which indeed I have just said—but I've been reading P.G. Wodehouse's wonderful "Jeeves" stories, and that's just the kind of simile Bertie or one of his pals would've used. Right-ho.

(Sorry for going off-topic like this, but I figure that if we go to all this trouble to maintain our Linux Mints, it must be for more reasons than than the maintenance itself. Otherwise it'd be like buying a canary in order to teach it to say "I'm a canary.")

Notwithstanding, 'English' is vague term - we are the ultimate b*st*rd race; at least 50% Roman, but they've all been here. Nearest you'll get to 'British' are the Welsh (sorry: Irish are only ~50%Celt, 50%Viking). The Welsh Celts were here first? Recent archeology suggests the Neanderthals lived here through the Ice Age, although there may have been others here during and before that, before the land-bridge got washed away? What price an Englishman!
And, of course, we all speak a derivation of Sanskrit in Europe. [For purists, recent evidence suggests that Sanskrit and the Indian civilisation is derived from the Tajikistanians. Lucy, where are you.]
