[Solved] Unable to login to sites when connected to a proxy

i have a 64bit work desktop dual booting windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10 via wubi
we connect through a proxy server provided by the University

when i boot in win7, i can login to sites like yahoomail, gmail, facebook, dropbox, etc.
but i am unable to when i'm in ubuntu, "This webpage is not available."
at first i thought it might be just with ubuntu needing something to be setup
and i'm pretty sure these websites are not blocked by the admin because i would get a generic "FORBIDDEN" page if it were
but i am still able to login to forums such as linux mint forums, etc.
i'm currently typing this at my work desktop

but when i connected the wire to my LMDE netbook same thing happens
just to add, i am also unable to access the firefox addon and chrome extension web sites

if i am able to login with win7, i should be to login with LMDE or with any distro
what do i need to setup, or install if needed, so i can also login to the websites stated above via proxy?
any input would be appreciated

I think your problem is with Internet cookies stored on your computer. If you disable cookies entirely, without allowing exceptions for those sites which use them to carry your login information from page to page, you get this effect. Check your Firefox browser settings.

the firefox i'm using is the pre-installed default setup for my LMDE netbook as well as for wubi
both have already been updated to 3.6.12 as of this time of writing
went to firefox preferences then under privacy tab and i have history as "remember history"
this would mean that firefox will accept cookies including third party sites

typed in http://www.gmail.com and it gave me
"Problem loading page"

Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at http://www.google.com.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

its funny because i can connect to http://www.google.com

i also noticed that i can access youtube videos but when i try to login
i get the above "problem loading page"

Did you set your proxy settings in Firefox?
In my company the IE ones are set by the IT Admins and I just use the same settings in IE for Firefox. (manual and pac urls work with Firefox)

@bensoliman, Do you have any add-ons in Firefox which block execution of Javascript from the sites? Have you tried Chromium browser to see if it has the same problems? Since Windows has no problems, it is likely a browser setting and/or add-on problem which is keeping you from keeping the proper cookies. I have had similar problems when the site is not allowed under NoScript.

hi everyone, sorry for the long delay in reply
i can now log in to the mentioned websites
i just needed to change the proxy settings for the browsers

in chromium click wrench button then preferences
"under the hood" tab then click change proxy settings
choose manual proxy configuration and use the same proxy for all protocols
then enter the proxy that you are using and the port number
after that, i can now access gmail, ymail, facebook, etc.

for firefox click edit then preferences
click advanced tab then network tabs then under connections the settings button
same as above, choose manual proxy configuration and use the same proxy for all protocols
then enter the proxy that you are using and the port number

thanks hinto and everyone for the inputs and suggestions
without you guys, i wouldn't have found the solution

nope, i don't use the noscript add on as i find it to limiting in my web surfing
