Major Problems (HELP ME PLEASE)

EDIT: I have completely reinstalled the OS, using a verified ISO file, and let the installer use the whole drive, partitioning as it sees fit. I am still having the following problems:

[*]The inability to boot up from standby/hibernate
[*]The inability to enter standby/hibernate
[*]Linux freezing(!!!)
[*]External speakers not muting when I plug in my headphones (took me about 10 minutes to figure out how to fix that, but it's annoying as hell to fix it every single time I plug my headphones in)
[*]Mouse sometimes not working on bootup, forcing another restart

I need help fixing these problems, they are very irritating, and compromise my ability to effectively work (very important, as I use my machine for my online college homework).

I did say I was sorry. (In fact I have now said it twice.) I was having a bad day, so I moved this over to another forum (the proper one) in an attempt to discuss this and get answers in a more civilized manner.

Also, for reference I use an HP Pavilion dv7 laptop, factory specs.

It's hard to tell. It honestly seems to be at random. The only programs I'm running or Firefox (admittedly with a few too many tabs open) and Trillian.

How was Mint installed?
How are your partitions set up?
Is there enough /swap to accommodate suspend/hibernate?
Do you happen to have an Intel video chipset? The lspci output will show what you have.

It is very hard to give advice without enough information being shared. Saying you have an HP Pavilion dv7 laptop is simply not enough info to go on.

Mint was installed via a DVD that I burned an ISO to using my HP desktop's default ISO-burning software.

I'm not sure how my partitions are set up. Is there any way I can find out, and if necessary, change the /swap partition?

Ha, ha, ha... "fsck" means file system check. Mine only runs every 25 or 30 boots. No, the machine is not cursing at you.

When you downloaded and burned the Mint ISO, it is quite possible you had either a bad download or a bad burn - possibly both. With a download, always check the MD5. If you use a torrent, you rarely get a bad download. I always use a torrent. When you burn a disc, always use the slowest possible speed. If you burned it at maximum, you probably have errors. For the record, I think this may be where the majority of your problems arise. This could also be why you get a fsck every time you boot.

If you allowed Mint to choose how to partition, that should be OK. You should have a big enough /swap and a decent /. Many of us partition manually.

I am going to say that your lspci is the biggest I have ever seen. I mean, wow! You have a lot under the hood. I was mainly focusing on what video you have:

At this point, I think the download and burn method you used may be worth some extreme focus.

Just to add to the previous post. To check the MD5Sum: when right-clicking the .iso within a running Linux Mint just select that entry from the list of options. Compare that to that to the value listed at the download link. If it doesn't match it wont work well or even at all. Try again. Find the link to the correct MD5 for the version you installed at: http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1581

If that is OK, try burning at the slowest speed to minimize the chance of errors during that step.

If you open a terminal and type:

and enter your password when prompted, fdisk will spit out your partitioning scheme.

I'd solve your freezing problems before worrying about a swap partition that may be too small to allow you to hibernate properly.

Oooookay. Something weird just happened. My computer wouldn't shut down properly, and when I switched it to data output mode, I saw this:

I believe so. That's how the guide I read told me to partition it.

I have never used ReiserFS. I know I have gotten excellent service with ext3 and ext4.

You just mentioned you installed your system with a guide of some kind. Do you have a link to that guide? I am only asking since you are having all sorts of problems that very few of us have ever experienced. Perhaps something was unusual in the guide you have followed. There are plenty of helpful suggestions for Mint which have worked great. I am just trying to track down why you are having these particular issues.
