Building a Audio Video studio using LMDE 64

Post by Niks »

HI folks

Like many others I'm really impressed with LMDE 64 and have been using it 24/7 since it was released.
I have decided to try to use it for my new AV home studio.
Who knows maybe this helps the move to Mint Debian 64 Studio ???

Not sure which PC I will use yet but nothing new ( Details will follow later ).
At the moment a standard mouse and keyboard but dual screen

Hardware

ESP 1010e a PCIe 8ch Audio interface http://www.esi-audio.com/products/esp1010e/
HVR1300 TV CARD ( for capture ) http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/site/product ... r1300.html
Korg nanokotrol ( midi controller ) http://www.korg.com/nanoseries
Contour shuttlexpress http://retail.contourdesign.com/?/products/22

None of the equipment above comes with Linux drivers but online I have found enough info which says it should work so lets see if it's true and in real time.

Software I intend to use.
Jack audio system http://jackaudio.org/
Ardour ( DAW ) http://www.ardour.org/
Audacity ( Multi track audio editor ) http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Rose Garden ( Midi sequencer ) http://www.rosegardenmusic.com/
Kdenlive ( non-linear video editor ) http://www.kdenlive.org/
WebcamStudio ( AV broadcasting utility ) http://www.ws4gl.org/

And all kinds of stuff that uses jack but first this "wish list"
I will make a dual boot system via bios and not grub with Windows just to see how things compare.

I'm not completely  to PC's or linux but decided to keep this to the level of my musical intelligence  I'm a drummer :?

If any one has any advise / tips  on the best way to do this please speak up :D !

Preliminary testing ( No time to sink my teeth in yet )

Only have one hard disk ready at the moment so I thought I would have a sneak preview.

Installed PCIe card from ESP 1010e and plugged in contour shuttlexpress.

Two entry's about a multimedia PCIe device but no sound card found.
Installed envy24 in the hope for more info ......dead end.

Shuttleexpress has been found but the only APP I know that is supposed to be ready to use with the jogging wheel out of the box is KINO.

Oh yeah thats right KINO dosn't work in LMDE ....tried it on 3 PC's ...it doesn't even install!

If anyone knows how to test the Shuttle please tell me what I can use.

A side line --------------
Just out of interest I installed ubuntu studio 64
Same problems

next windows just to sure the hard ware actual works! :P

Man, I so must get my own stuff going... :)

I have an acer laptop and bought a smaller (2 octave) midi keyboard with controller knobs. It worked like a charm with
lmms under ubuntustudio. I never got to rosegarden and whatelse cause lmms was just too much fun. I'm planning to
have at least a dual install with probably ubuntustudio 10.04 for the soundwork...

The midikeyboard didn't have any special software either so it just send midi controlmessages. Which means it doesn't
matter what operative system you're using. If you're midi setup works your nanocontroll will work too. All functions.

I did a quick search for the esp1010e and it looks like you could be facing somewhat of a bumpy ride there. I'll keep
an eye on this thread.

good luck

oskar

ps. I read somewhere that you'ld better have a realtime kernel for professional soundwork so that could be something
to consider.

update

manged to get the ESP1010e and the Shuttle running in Windows 7 so I know the hard ware is ok.
The Nanokontrol although found by the software from Korg has very nice led lighting  but thats it so far.

Thx Oscar for the moral support .... :D

I know the road ahead is very bumpy and I fact I'm not even sure if there is a road ahead but maybe I can make one via this forum.

One things for sure I will learn a lot :) Still if this works I will promote the use of the system to as many people as I can around me In the hope that the interest increases in using Linux in the studio and hope to see one day on sites "MAC and PC compatible Windows/Linux"

Still waiting for some one to point me in the right way about testing and maybe programing my shuttlexpress jogging wheel.......I really could use it now for kdenlive!

Hmmm, the Kino not installing in LMDE must be a 32 bit/64 bin issue. I have it installed in my LMDE 32 bit.

At last a bit of time to get things moving.

Got the ShuttleXpress to work in kdenlive .....BUT

you have to start it as "root" or it's not there! Have found some stuff to do with udev rules but as yet it's not helping get the shuttle up without root!
Any help would be welcome :D

WebcamStudio ( AV broadcasting utility ) http://www.ws4gl.org is working beautifully even in skype after hours and hours or searching :x
( please don't laugh at the source of web page )

Hope to get further soon.

P.S. Guess what site came up the most in my Google searches for info on theses issues :?: This page

 Update on progress

OH dear what happened to LMDE :?:

Ok enough said about the last updates

I have been trying to get my tasks sorted out in my growing studio and have now got 3 PC's involved.
1- The main DAW PC
2 - Video - Just for using multi cam broadcasts / skype/msn/google talk etc vis webcam studio
3 - Instument - Has an Maudio ICE24 type interface works fine in linux and is just for Guitar effects rack and syth programs. Also has midi.

I'm am trying to get them all to run on LDME and it was working out fine until I tried to reorganise my equipemt and get the fast hard disks where I needed them then all went nuts!!!!
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=76294 says it all!

So I know stuff works using LMDE with Jack and Webcam studio so as soon as the drive problem is solved I'll be back!
