Almost all logs are in /var/logs
There is a log for aptitude which will have the information about what has been installed - only the package names though...
I've updated level 1, 2 and 3 without problems - you may have some special hardware....

I just installed MintUpdate 1.4 on Celena.

Tried it out and updated a category 3 update (HAL).
It removed lots of Gnome-stuff, like gnome-network and so on.

Now my Celena will not enter X anymore. It says that the session lasted less than 10 seconds and then I'm redirected to the login screen again.
I discovered exactly the same problem. Since I'm a noob, I don't know what to do with the logs - and how to get them. Is there a way of restoring the old status before the installation of that update?

To solve this "your session lasted less than 10 seconds" thing:

1 - Reboot
2 - On the login screen, choose session "Safe Terminal" (or something like that. My Mint is in Portuguese)
3 - Type--> sudo chown your_user_name .ICEauthority
4 - Type--> exit
5 - Start Gnome session

PS - attention to the dot (.) before ICEauthority

Cheers
Sorry, but that's the way it is.

Are you sure?
Maybe my mistake:

Step 2.5: cd ..
Step 3: sudo chown /home/your_user_name .ICEauthority

I had this problem in the past and this always worked for me. Maybe it's ICEAuthority, with a capital A after ICE, I can't check now, I'm on Windows (!!!!!).

Cheers

Sorry, man, I can't help you unfortunately. As I said, it always worked for me. Now, I'm back to Mint. Please, one last try:

1 cd / (not cd..)
2 sudo chown /home/your_user_name .ICEauthority
3 exit
4 Choose Gnome

If this doesn't work, I have nothing else, zilch.

Cheers

PS - This is to solve your problem with the graphic interface, not to show what was deleted. And if your .ICEautorithy file was deleted?
Before perform the steps above, type ls -l .ICEauthority. If it exists, you'll see something like this:

-rw------- 1 ceti ceti 21744 2007-10-14 16:47 .ICEauthority
(you must see your_username your_username, not ceti ceti, or root your_username)
Sorry, but that's the way it is.
