Epson SX420W installation on Mint

Post by norton »

Hello,

I have bought an Epson SX420w wi-fi printer which I have installed on my desktop with no trouble (Win XP). But I am unable to install it on my laptop (Linux Mint exclusively)

When I put the CD in I have to open it and all I get is a load of files that mean absolutely nothing to me. In XP I was taken through the installation with ease. Please can someone help me to install the printer on my laptop in really understandable instructions!?

Thank you!

You can download the linux driver at the following link:

http://linux.avasys.jp/drivers/lsb/epso ... 2_i386.deb

I do not know if it run fine, but I think that yes works...

Another solution, not tested by me, run Playonlinux and you will be install using your windows printer CD; if you do not have playonlinux installed, install it by synaptic...

I think that the first solution is better; I installed a CANON PIXMA downloading the linux driver and now it is running fine...

Thanks for your reply, I have installed the Epson drivers but what do I do now? I have no idea how to access the printer. This is driving me mad - not as easy as windows!!

menu / administration / printing

if the driver didn't auto install the printer. It should show up in the add section.

Also just little FYI

In truth it is EASIER then windows bro.

All about being in the know lol.

To add as a wireless, is simple.

Just search via ip address as a network printer.

Printer must be connected to the wifi network first. Use the printers LCD menu to view its assigned ip.

You cannot use the printer's CD with Linux.

After looking up the IP (consult the manual how to do this), open menu > Administration > Printing.
Click to add a printer.
Open 'Network Printer' by clicking the plus sign / arrow before it.
Choose 'Find printer' and fill in the IP. Press OK.
Then it should work, if the driver is installed.

Note that the driver is for 32-bit Linux. If you're using 64-bit, this one should be used:
http://linux.avasys.jp/drivers/lsb/epso ... _amd64.deb

Note that many printer drivers are preinstalled in Mint, but I don't know if this one is there out-of-the-box.

As you see, installing a printer may even be easier on Mint than on Windows.

With the HP Photosmart c4780 I just had to type the IP address and it was ready. But that's HP...

If you need more information on using this printer with Linux, you can look here: http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Eps ... 20W_Series
There is also an alternative driver for if this one does not work OK.

I have down loaded the relevant drivers, my lap top recognises the printer, albeit with not the exact Epson model number. when I try and print a test page or print a document the printer goes berserk pulling page after page through at a huge rate, but printing nothing!

This is all being done with the USB connection. The printer works OK on the desktop (Win XP).

Any ideas, please?

The only working drivers for this printer are: epson-nx420 (indeed, slightly different model number) and epson-escpr. Are you using one of these drivers?
