Has anyone plunged on updating grub? I'm a little nervous to jump in.

Code: Select all

stmiller@brahms:~$ sudo apt-get upgrade
[sudo] password for stmiller:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
  grub-common grub-pc
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 2 not upgraded.

Hi,
usually I do updates through smxi or synaptic.
yes, have applied the grub-common grub-pc..
asked if I wanted to retain my modified grub or install the developer version.
opted to keep my version, then all went OK.
no boot problems
:D

I have also applied the grub updates, and kept the modified settings. No problems at all.

kruijf, i believe (i'm not in LMDE atm) that yesterday we had a udev update, check please in synaptic history; udev has been buggy for some time, you can try roll back to the previous version to see if helps (if this is the cause of the problem, i don't know, might be)

Hello kruijf,

it looks like a problem i once had with a udev update. Helpful was, boot the recovery mode. In the terminal run

Code: Select all

telinit 5
You should have a working system now. Open the terminal and run

Code: Select all

ls -l /etc/rc*.d/*udev*
if you get something like this:

Code: Select all

# ls -l /etc/rc*.d/*udev*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19  4. Jul 23:27 /etc/rc0.d/K01udev-mtab -> ../init.d/udev-mtab
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 29. Jun 21:39 /etc/rc0.d/K02udev -> ../init.d/udev
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19  4. Jul 23:27 /etc/rc1.d/K01udev-mtab -> ../init.d/udev-mtab
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 29. Jun 21:39 /etc/rc1.d/K02udev -> ../init.d/udev
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 23. Aug 22:06 /etc/rc2.d/K01udev-mtab -> ../init.d/udev-mtab
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 13. Sep 22:28 /etc/rc2.d/S02udev -> ../init.d/udev
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19  4. Jul 23:27 /etc/rc3.d/K01udev-mtab -> ../init.d/udev-mtab
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 29. Jun 21:39 /etc/rc3.d/K02udev -> ../init.d/udev
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19  4. Jul 23:27 /etc/rc4.d/K01udev-mtab -> ../init.d/udev-mtab
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 29. Jun 21:39 /etc/rc4.d/K02udev -> ../init.d/udev
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 20. Sep 21:47 /etc/rc5.d/S02udev -> ../init.d/udev
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 20. Sep 23:33 /etc/rc5.d/S13udev-mtab -> ../init.d/udev-mtab
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19  4. Jul 23:27 /etc/rc6.d/K01udev-mtab -> ../init.d/udev-mtab
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 29. Jun 21:39 /etc/rc6.d/K02udev -> ../init.d/udev
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 24. Feb 2010  /etc/rcS.d/S02udev -> ../init.d/udev
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 25. Feb 2010  /etc/rcS.d/S13udev-mtab -> ../init.d/udev-mtab
delete all the udev links from rc0 - rc6. Don't touch rcS.d, it's needed like it is.

Hope it helps :wink:

Ok I will be honest and say I did not read all of the above :oops:

WHY!

I thought I had made a mess of my system so I wanted a clean install so I did just that! right down to wipe partitions. :)

After 4 attempts I got the advice install all levels including 4 and 5 so I did. result is this :arrow:

I now have 2 kernels in grub.The lower version being default
I get "/usr/bin/mint-fortune: line 35: [: ==: unary operator expected" on the top line of terminal for no reason
If I move a window the graphics becomes scrambled.
I had to install almost everything from gstreamer by hand to get my Phillips web cam to work in cheese
I found out the hard way that after installing updates you could no longer unlock the "login in screen"
A friend has Russian language ( or something like it) in the second part of the menu but no where else!
Yes we both had the broken packages but just doing level by level it fixed itself
Google chrome tells me it's out out date but also say it's the most resent version so I can't add any extentions.
Skype refuses to show video ( yes I am using the beta download from skype )
Tomboy notes has appeared once on the menu bar in these installs.
Webcamstudio can not load virtual driver any more.
And yes the famous 64 bit flash player making talking sound like a Dalek being tickled ( for you Dr Who fans )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAk2HjHS ... re=related

And I'm sure I missed something ....oh yeah

Before the update EVERY THING WORKED fine !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cry:

If this is the result of a "rolling" distro I'm not impressed ! :roll:

So where do I go from here ????? :idea:

regarding the terminal. I can help you with that but the other problems, I had no experience so I will let others help you on it.

use the terminal and enter the code

Code: Select all

sudo nano /usr/bin/mint-fortune
look for line 35 and change it to

Code: Select all

if [ $showfortunes="true" ]; then
save by pressing Ctrl+O press enter then Ctrl+X to close.

Thanks aljoriz
For your info
This is what I have
if [ -x "/usr/bin/gconftool-2" ]; then
showfortunes=`gconftool-2 --get /desktop/linuxmint/terminal/show_fortunes 2$
if [ $showfortunes == "true" ]; then
show_fortune
fi
else

So nothing to change then :shock:

I think the point I'm trying to make is that this last update IS A DOWNDATE and it will cost myself and a lot of other helpful people a lot of time to fix something that wasn't broken! :roll:

I do except that there maybe be some problems with LMDE in the beginning and don't mind putting in the time to fix things and post my findings to help one and all. But this is too much so I will probably just work with a broken system till the next iso release or install mint 11 for now !

I hope an Admin reads this and passes on this disaster story.

This is not a complaint just feedback with just a hint of polite annoyance ( well I am English ) :?

I am sorry if it didn't help

Let me share that I just recently did a fresh install and an update (downloading the updates is a pain 1.3hours :lol: ). I didn't have such error that you have experienced. I disabled the fortunes though.

I think the LInux Mint team was very specific in saying the LMDE is not a stable system and they do recommend using Mint 11 or Mint 9 for a Long Term Support usage.

I understand your frustration and I hope that this reply may help you.

My little understanding of shell scripting would suggest me to rewrite the (in)famous line 35 as:

Code: Select all

		if [ "$showfortunes" == "true" ]; then
Very little improvement though, in the general breakage described by Niks.
I managed to have a working LMDE by keeping it updated on a daily basis since its early installation (in fact it's my main OS at the moment).
It's quite hard to setup a rolling system from a 6-months old live DVD + all the updates in a stroke. IMHO LMDE is the coolest linux distro I have ever tried, but given its rolling nature, it would need extra care from the team, for example a frequent refresh of the live images to allow NEW installations to complete successfully with less hassle.
I would wait for the updated images to start with, I believe they should be out soon.

As far as fixing the fortunes goes, I found what I believe to be the more appropriate way to fix it. The version of mint-fortune currently being shipped is the one from Mint 11, which has been written to check the value of a gconf key linked to an option in Desktop Settings (in Mint 11, not in LMDE... yet) to enable or disable the fortunes in terminals. While some of the "fixes" mentioned here do work, I think the best way is to manually add the key and set its value.

In a terminal:

Code: Select all

gconftool-2 --set /desktop/linuxmint/terminal/show_fortunes --type bool true
To enable fortunes for the root account, just add sudo to the beginning of that command and enter your password as prompted.

Hopefully someone in charge of maintaining LMDE will notice this and push the updated Desktop Settings app to LMDE so this is fixed and we can configure this option the same way as in Mint 11, since we've already received the updated mint-fortune...

Niks: see my explanation to fix the 64bit flash audio issue here. The only likely way anyone would be able to help you with most of the other issues (unless they've had them personally) would be if you gave more details on an issue by issue basis. I'm sure its frustrating to have alot of things break on an issue, but its hard for folks to help without details.

Adobe Flash Update

mint-flashplugin was updated in LMDE. If, after the update, Flash doesn't work for you anymore, do the following:

- Close your browser
- Open a terminal
- Type sudo update-alternatives --config libflashplayer.so
- Choose your version of Flash (if you have more than one installed).

If you don't see any alternatives there, maybe you need to do:

for amd64:
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so libflashplayer.so /opt/mint-flashplugin-square/libflashplayer.so 10

for i386:
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so libflashplayer.so /opt/mint-flashplugin-10.2/libflashplayer.so 10

Though.. this should be done for you by the package already.

This should sort things out and update any link that may be broken.

OK hozomean your quite right I should stop moaning and provide details :oops:
Dam I'm now getting into this :lol:

Ok flash is fixed used
1. edit /etc/ld.so.preload as root (this file does not exist on a stock version of LMDE). add this single line:
/usr/lib/libc/memcpy-preload.so
This will apply the patch system-wide.
Sorry clem all I got was
update-alternatives: error: no alternatives for libflashplayer.so.
Will have a go at the fortunes prob next.

By the way did any one try this Menu / control panel / network / help ?
The opening opening of the help window is looped ....reminds me of wining in Solitaire in windows win3.11 :shock: ( it does stop in the end :wink: )

I think emotions ( something the open source community has yet to master ) have got in the way a little the last few days but I wish to quote someone, dear the Mint team if I may, sums up my feeling perfectly.
Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it
