It's because linux mint "latest" repository is out of sync with debian multimedia at this point. You can fix it by pointing your repo sources at mainline debian testing instead of mint "latest" but it may not be as stable.

Change your sources to look like;

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
#deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free

Sent from my Cyanogenmod hungry Htc Sensation.

Hi, I thought so to. But I did this already prior to posting, and the error messages are identical. I modified /etc/apt/sources.list and did apt-get update.

# cat /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
#deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free

No sorry, doesn't help. I've tried both the debian testing repo's and the LMDE 'latest' repo's, error message is identical between the two of them.

sorry, ctrlbrk, maybe a silly question, but when was the last time you did a full upgrade on your system?

If by full upgrade you mean re-install, it was 2 days ago. If you mean apt-get upgrade or dist-upgrade, I do them regularly.

i was referring to dist-upgrade, because that uname -a 32-5 is the ancient kernel, but, yes, you can have some issues with newer kernels and keep booting the old one;

anyway, fully updated LMDE tracking testing

Yes, there is an irqpoll problem on the newer kernels (I have a thread on it here) so I am stuck using 2.6.32 for now.

I appreciate you testing that. I assume you did do x64. But the fact it works for you is not helping me. I would expect it to work :) What I need to know is how to correct whatever is wrong and preventing mine from working.

Re: Broken packages for skype, others

i saw your other topic after my previous answer (yeahh, newer ain't always better);

- my testing was just to discard that the problem could be upstream (and so many times it is)

- so, let's see, you installed one of the previous release (not the 201108-rc), that means that right after you had a lot of updates to do, dist-upgrade went wrong, broke, died in perl or samba, you had to call the big guns (apt-get -f install) to proceed, and then finish the dist-upgrade (and with some luck you had to repeat this more than once to get a clean prompt after your last dist-upgrade) - well, if you did all of this, and didn't mess around with the sources.list, honestly i have no idea why you have so many unmet dependencies.

to me, and this is just my personal opinion, this looks like an unfinished dist-upgrade (but i may be wrong)

E: Broken packages
Above was on LM 'latest' repo. I switched back to debian repo, apt-get update, and repeated. It worked this time (I swear it didn't work before, I've tried this 10 times, maybe it was something else?)

That's great. Skype is installed now! YIPPIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But, I still can't install xvidcap. Same error as before:

SOLVED...

Replaced:
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free

with:
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org stable main non-free

That let me install xvidcap. Seems testing had 4.0 while stable had 5.0, lol.

Thanks for the help :)
