force your system to use a specific dhcp server

Post by sharmila »

Hi,
I live at an apartment building where a common internet connection is shared by all of us in the apartments. The main modem is connected to a router from which each of us get our connection. My trouble my system does not get the ip from the main dhcp server in the modem. Instead the request is routed to another router in one of the homes (which also connected to the main router.). The ip of the main modem is 192.168.11.2 Is there anyway to specify that the dhcp request should be forwarded only to that address?

Thank you
Sharmila

No, unfortunately that's not possible with DHCP.

Your computer sends out a generic 'Give me an IP address' request and the first DHCP server on the same network subnet that sees the request will reply with an IP for your computer.

It sounds like you may need to give your machine a static IP address.
