The update to Python 2.7 would have removed aptdaemon, python-aptdaemon and mintinstall for me. I managed to fully perform the update without removing any packages, but it meant having to downgrade aptdaemon and python-aptdaemon to the version from the Debian repo. The version in the Mint repo while newer, depends on a version of Python earlier than 2.7. Only mintinstall depends on those two packages on my system, so I don't see much of an issue if it plays up due to the downgrade.

Anyway, so far so good.

Lippy, unfortunately i can't do the same: with a full upgrade mintinstall, aptdaemon and python-aptdaemon got unistalled and now trying to install any or both of the last (downgrading to the debian v. results on broken pkgs); and mintinstall is unistalable because deps on them;

apart from this, all the rest is functional

@zerozero, i disabled the mint repos temporarely and could install aptdaemon and python-aptdaemon. mintinstall is
buried, but that's ok because i never needed it

I'm having the same problem with mintinstall also after the update. Other things seem to be working though.
Still trying to figure out why:

It would be nice if LMDE didn't need any packages holding back, but at the moment it does (if you are an nvidia user anyway), so I have this small suggestion to make things look a little tidier at least. It is purely cosmetic, it doesn't do any real good and maybe some of you know it already, but I didn't know it until recently so here it is, take it or leave it as you wish.

The reason we all have so many xorg packages installed is due to the presence of xserver-xorg-video-all. This is what apt-cache says about it:

This package depends on the full suite of output drivers for the X.Org X server
(Xorg). It does not provide any drivers itself, and may be removed if you wish
to only have certain drivers installed.

So it is basically just a meta package that pulls in the drivers for every video card it knows about, and as it says above if you want to delete it you can. If you do, you can then delete all the useless drivers installed on your system as well. For example if you have an nvidia card you don't need the intel or ati drivers installed etc. etc. I managed to reduce my list of held packages to this:

xserver-xorg-input-synaptics xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
xserver-xorg-video-vesa

Which is a little better looking than the full list. In reality I could have disposed of the 'nouveau' and 'vesa' drivers as well, but I keep them there as insurance, and if you don't have a touchpad then you wouldn't need the 'synaptics' driver either.

More info on the FIX -- Slowdown with Xorg 1.11 and Nvidia Driver 285.05.09 problems.

Note: This is mainly for reference, and for those who like to experiment. It comes from the "SID breakages" forum.
Basically there is a "patched x-server" download available from the "Frickelplatz" repository, that addresses this problem.
The slowdown problem doesn't effect all Nvidia cards, just those that do not support "trapezoidal acceleration"

It explains why I was not having the slowdown problem and others (Viking, et al) were.
My Graphics card Nvidia GTX 460 supports "trapezoidal acceleration", and some cards do not.

There is a fix there for the "adventurous"

Gerd, that workaround got installed the debian v. and kicked off the ubuntu-patched v. Clem had in LMDE, what i would like to know is what one has that the other misses, or in what way one (debian) was broken to patch an ubuntu pkg; looking at apt-cache i'm no wiser after than before

ffmpeg will not update for it can't find all the packages it needs, the others will knock out all my video playback programs and thumbnails, will only leave me Totem and Mplayer.

New user here; I accidently installed all of the xorg updates before I installed fglrx, and now it seems my system is screwed.

X is REALLY slow, compiz/emerald won't work at all and it'd be really helpful if someone could tell me how to downgrade all of the xorg stuff back to the versions in the mint repos.

%$#@! Should've read this thread before performing apt-get dist-upgrade. I think I'll just wait for mintInstall to be fixed... personally only use it for commenting anyway.

A couple of other things I noticed:
1. Tomboy applet for GNOME Panel is gone. Not sure if it's the Python upgrade or Tomboy itself because if you install Gnote there will still be no applet on the list. Solution is dead easy though: add Tomboy to Startup Applications and access it from the system tray.
2. Got this weird message when booting: "PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions ... (warning)". Reinstalled PulseAudio along with all its dependencies and still got the same message, but sound works OK. So what exactly does the warning mean?

I downgraded a bunch of xorg packages and reinstalled/configured fglrx, but my system is still acting up.

I might just reinstall.
