What information can I provide else?

Are you trying wireless or wired internet? Wired internet should work. Wireless will take some problem solving. type this into terminal (copy, then ctrl+shift+v to paste) and reply with the output

Code: Select all

lspci -vvnn | grep 14e4

Hi,

Well, I've wired internet connection. I ran both command lines - they're two, right? - and as you'll, see only one worked..

No, run it as one command. Do you have wireless on that computer?
Well, I've wired internet connection.
Does that mean you can access the internet using the wired connection or that's how you would generally access the internet?

Well, to be specific I have a wired router at home..

As for the command line, as is nothing happened but when I removed the separator this showed..

mint@mint ~ $ lspci -vvnn grep 14e4
Usage: lspci [<switches>]

Basic display modes:
-mm Produce machine-readable output (single -m for an obsolete format)
-t Show bus tree

Display options:
-v Be verbose (-vv for very verbose)
-k Show kernel drivers handling each device
-x Show hex-dump of the standard part of the config space
-xxx Show hex-dump of the whole config space (dangerous; root only)
-xxxx Show hex-dump of the 4096-byte extended config space (root only)
-b Bus-centric view (addresses and IRQ's as seen by the bus)
-D Always show domain numbers

Resolving of device ID's to names:
-n Show numeric ID's
-nn Show both textual and numeric ID's (names & numbers)
-q Query the PCI ID database for unknown ID's via DNS
-qq As above, but re-query locally cached entries
-Q Query the PCI ID database for all ID's via DNS

Selection of devices:
-s [[[[<domain>]:]<bus>]:][<slot>][.[<func>]] Show only devices in selected slots
-d [<vendor>]:[<device>] Show only devices with specified ID's

Other options:
-i <file> Use specified ID database instead of /usr/share/misc/pci.ids.gz
-p <file> Look up kernel modules in a given file instead of default modules.pcimap
-M Enable `bus mapping' mode (dangerous; root only)

PCI access options:
-A <method> Use the specified PCI access method (see `-A help' for a list)
-O <par>=<val> Set PCI access parameter (see `-O help' for a list)
-G Enable PCI access debugging
-H <mode> Use direct hardware access (<mode> = 1 or 2)
-F <file> Read PCI configuration dump from a given file

the | line needs to be included. Just copy paste that whole command into the terminal and then paste the output using the "Code" option that you see at the top when you're typing a reply

@soccerz619: From the output already shared of just the lspci -vvnn, there is no 14e4 string in it. What is 14e4 in relation to this problem?

@BonbonRose: You say you have a wired router at home. Just to be clear, there is a wire from the computer with the problem going into this wired router? Check that on the back of the computer, where the wire goes in, there are two lights flickering (usually one to the left of the wire and one to the right). Just to confirm the network card has a connection with the wired router.

@xenopeek
there is a wire from the computer with the problem going into this wired router?
Yes, and I checked it's secure at both ends.

Here's the result

Well, if you have a wired connection, let's see about it. Please share the output of the following command:

Okay, it is not seeing your ethernet device. From your earlier lspci output, I now see:
02:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Atheros Communications AR8151 v1.0 Gigabit Ethernet [1969:1073] (rev c0)
Subsystem: Giga-byte Technology Device [1458:e000]

Hi,

First of all Thank you for the link and sorry for my late reply I had some problems and I couldn't post back right away..

The steps is a little bit vague to me, would you mind clearing them up for me

1) Download und unpack the driver from the Atheros website >> unpack to the drivers directory (C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers)
3) cd into the src sub directory of the driver >> what's cd
from step 4 on I don't know how to do it

Sorry if this seem silly but I'm a total newbie

cd is command line for change directory.
"cd into the src sub directory of the driver" change your directory to folder src of your unpacked driver.
example your location of unpacked drivers is /home/yourname/Download/atheros you will see src directory
type in terminal : cd /home/yourname/Download/atheros/src
the easy way is open computer>Downloads>atheros . right click to folder src select open in terminal

execute mean is copy and paste in terminal and press enter

Hi,

I tried writing the command in terminal but I got
the file name, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect
I'm afraid I need more detailed steps.. I'm not able to understand clearly.

I'm using Windows XP and downloaded both drive and patch @ E:\New Folder.

I am sure is very difficult to configure a network driver use live cd (media is not write able ). If you install the driver , when you restart it will disappear, maybe you will try with newer version. Maybe Mint 11, or 12 :?: I see your VGA card is capable running GNOME3.

Hi,
maybe you will try with newer version. Maybe Mint 11, or 12
And this will fix the internet connection problem? What about other distros? I've been trying Ubuntu and I'm having the same problems.

Re: Can't log on to the internet during the Live session

Post by hefff »

nope but its newer and alot better. So u r doing that patch in Mint not in windows. So in mint push ctrl-alt-t to start terminal. After u download the driver in the same directory as in next code, follow the steps:
cd /tmp/Atheros/drv
tar xvvf AR81Family-linux-v1.0.1.14.tar.gz
cd /tmp/Atheros/patch
tar xvvf AR81Family-linux-v1-1.0.1.14.patch.tar.gz
sudo make install
sudo modprobe atl1e
1st u gettin in the directory, extracting file - change something if its with other name (folder or file name), then getting in the extracted file directory and start it then im not sure what last 1 do :D
