We all understand why Mint has it's modified search engine default, it helps fund the project. Some of us will choose to use it because it helps fund the project. Some of us will choose to use our regular search engine instead. None of this is a problem. There is no way that anyone would describe the Mint search addon as in any way "enhancing" the regular results that we'd get without it. Google cripple these custom search engines to a noticeable level. Look at the number of complaints around the Mint search enhancer, in how bad it is, how inferior it is compared to the regular Google. Look at how many people would happily use it if is was good enough. It's not. It's nowhere near good enough.
So why is the name and description selling it as "an enhancement"? This must be a new definition of "enhance" that I am not aware of. The regular definition of "enhance" is about "make better". It's like entertainment companies "enhancing" their products with DRM. The DRM enhances the deal from the companies side of the deal, not the consumers. The Mint search enhancer enhances the deal from Mint's side of the deal, not the end users.
Wouldn't it be more honest to rename the Mint search enhancer, and change it's description? Right now, it's a pretty clear example of false advertising. By all means carry on with the default settings. My point is in the naming of what it is, not matching what it actually does.

Re: Disengenious description on Mint Search Enhancer
I have to agree that certainly doesn't enhance a search, as a point of fact it depreciates it. I use Mint's search engine first and if that reveals little, I revert to Google.ThistleWeb wrote:My point is in the naming of what it is, not matching what it actually does.

Hi,
Google CSE is pretty barebone. One of the features it's missing compared to regular Google is the ability to click on "Image", "Video", etc.. in the top bar of the page.
The Search Enhancer does exactly that. It adds the top bar from regular Google to your CSE results page.

^^ That is true. Although it's worth noting that the Mint page in question doesn't use Google. It uses Google CSE. And that this "enhancer" doesn't in any way affect your regular Google searches, but only the ones you perform with CSE.There is no way that anyone would describe the Mint search addon as in any way "enhancing" the regular results that we'd get without it.
