Skype_static - what is it ???

I notice that on the download page for Skype for Linux there are several versions available including one named Skype_Static.

What is Skype_static & how does it differ from say the 32 bit version that is listed for use with Ubuntu ?

Can the Skype_static version be used with Linux Mint 11 ?

That really does not answer my question as to what Skype_static is or ultimately my problem that the version of Skype that is currently included with version 11 of Linux Mint does not work !!!

Any ideas as to what Skype_static is ?

You might want to ask that question at Skype's support page as well if by chance you're not getting any answers here. After all, who is best qualified to answer Skype-related queries if not Skype support itself?

The static and dynamic packages are generic .tar.bz2 files that we can use to compile from source and install in any Linux distribution. (For example: Until recently, Dropbox did not have an installer for Debian. Debian users could download the generic tar file, compile and install Dropbox.)

This might explain the difference between static and dynamic tar files foe skype:

If the default installation for LM 11 does not work for you, you could try one/all of the following:
1. Completely purge skype and reinstall using Synaptic/Software Manager.
2. Download the appropriate installer for Ubuntu (32/64 bit) and install on Mint. I've found that most packages, ppas and installers that work for Ubuntu, work on Mint too.
3. Download the static/dynamic tar files and compile from source.
