update manager problem
When I try to run the update manager, I get this error: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
I'm having 'no sound' issues, I think I successfully updated the alsa package as an individual instruction through system/package manager but would like to get updates as they are released. Any ideas please? lmde gnome 32 bit

Re: update manager problem
have you tried updating or repairing mintupdate by using synaptic?
Re: update manager problem
I saw a similar thread with a solution, tried the instructions advised and got this?;

Re: update manager problem
Ok , I found synaptic is the package manager I used earlier, I also have a sound problem I was trying to update some pulse audio 'driver files'. I think all of the out of date filed ended up being updated - which is ultimately what I wanted to happen, but not at this particular time.
I watched the activity as some of the files were updated, it appeared to me (as an inexperienced user) that some of the files were 'struggling' to update or did not install successfully? I am now unable to boot into linux even booting into recovery mode does not work. In both cases it prompts for a 'logon', I do not have this, I don't recall setting it. typing in the password I have is not right, the following prompt is for the password!

Re: update manager problem
Gosh, that's not you wanted is it? I'm out of my depth being a 'newbie' myself.
You might try using the passwd command to check what named users are recognised, after the command prompt type:
passwd -S
this gives the account name and a P' if a usable password exists or 'NP' if not.
then type passwd scotty33 (or whatever name you've used). This will prompt for a new password for that user. Never tried it myself, so can't comment on how effective this is. You might have to try using sudo passwd -S and sudo passwd scotty33.
I'd have to hope that if you can log-in thereafter, you then get back to a fully functioning Mint.
This doesn't explain why you have been un-able to get into Mint after doing an up-date.
You haven't mentioned which version of Mint you are using - this would be useful.

Re: update manager problem
Thanks Hugh, will give it a go.
My install is Mint Debian Edition (in my defence I posted in that section, however not realised that the posts crop up elsewhere on the forum) it's the 32 bit version

Re: update manager problem
the gstreamer packages (2) have to be unchecked to do an update.
they start with: gstreamer ?????
the update should work.
then, update again (it will just do the gstreamer packages)
and you should be set...

Re: update manager problem
Hi Scotty,
i found out what went wrong. I misinterpreted this information
in your sound thread. When i answered i didn't know hal is your computer name. I thought, what the hell is a hal tty1hal login
I've seen now, you edited the post.
Well, at your hal tty1 login promt you have to login with your username first, then the password.

I have been trying to reinstall mint and came across the page where you fill in details, by default the login is set to the user's first name, in my case it would have been Andrew. I typed this into the login prompt:
Code: Select all
Linux Mint Debian Edition hal tty1hal login:
I am trying to burn a bootable cd or dvd, I somehow managed this ok last time, but I am failing miserably at the moment! Will keep trying... my mother in law will be pleased, discs make good bird scarers for her vegetable patch!

Thanks for this reply , it may have worked but I will never know. I managed to run the updates through the synaptic package manager, it has not worked sinceblueoyster wrote:the gstreamer packages (2) have to be unchecked to do an update.

Re: update manager problem
Hi All,
I finally managed to reinstall a newer version of Mint Debian Edition, I just ran the updater and it worked fine. Still no sound, but that's another thread..

Re: update manager problem
I was having the same problems; fresh install too...
I was able to get the updates working with the following:
In the terminal
The two updates might be redundant, the key is the "apt-get check" but anyway it's working now.
I hope this was helpful.
