Mint logs me off randomly on t500

Post by greengunboat »

I made the switch over from Ubuntu, and I have everything setup perfectly, and I am loving mint.

Except, for this nasty bug... it seems to happen when im on firefox, but I will click a new tab, the machine will all of a sudden log off. It has happened twice to me today, and that is way too much.

This happened before, but went away after I installed some updates, and now it is back. I am not sure what is causing this, but any suggestions on what to look for, or possible solutions?

Also, if anyone thinks it might be hardware related, I am using a Lenovo t500.

Thanks!

Can you have a look at your /var/log/syslog file? A quick post here of anything relevant in that file might help.

Agree with kabads. It probably not the manager logging you off, but X crashing and restarting, with a result you being presented a login-screen.

You can also check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for messages from X.

According to ThinkWiki this laptop exists with Intel graphics, and with Intel+ATI hybrid. I'd like to know which of these configurations your T500 has, and which card is in use in case it's hybrid. Please post the output of:

I cant post my syslog for whatever reason... the forum software says 'too few characters' then deletes my post in the input box.... just super!

Any clues from the above stuff though? Thanks!

Please post your output between [ code] and [ /code] minus the spaces, or put it up on http://pastebin.com/ and post the URL here.

Regarding the log you posted, at what time (timestamp and "xx seconds past boot" please) did the event of resetting occur?

I think VGA driver problem Firefox. Try turn off hardware acceleration in firefox preferences.

@greengunboat - pastebin is your friend for long log files. I can't see anything suspicious in your x file - so it would be good to see syslog.

If you're having problems with 4th generation Intel graphics hardware please add this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~glasen/+archive/intel-driver

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:glasen/intel-driver
And then install all updates, you'll get an update to the X.org Intel graphics driver.

Thanks for the replys guys... I think it has done this once since I posted it that initial day, but nothing recently...

If it happens again, I will post my syslog and note that exact time.

Also, how would I tell if I have a 4th gen intel graphics card? I bought my think pad probably a year and a half ago (under the lenovo name) or so I would say, so it isn't the lastest and greatest.

Then again, maybe I do? Would this be causing my problems with the GUI? Is this a fairly common problem?

Ok, I hit the print screen button at 16:26 and this thing shit the bed again. Just straight up logged me off.... then when I logged back in my panel applets didn't want to load (this happens from time to time). I click on 'dont delete', restart, and everything is fine...

Any thoughts on this one guys? Thanks!

Here is a pastebin link (thanks for that one)... since this forum software works so great....

Syslogs like this aren't really useful. You'd better post the xorg log (in /var/log). There may be multiple logs, please look to the date & time in the file's properties to see which one was made at the time of the crash.

Mate, enough with the remarks already. The forum-software is performing as it's intended but, rightfully so, limits the input to xx characters per post, most likely a couple thousand. If we were allowed to input unlimited data, we would be able to either corrupt the database or the forum-software. Pastebin just has a different purpose is all, a bucket of information to posters, and data to anyone else. It doesn't parse input, it doesn't do mark-up.

Anyway, back to the matter at hand.

You said that you got kicked from user environment, and put back into the login-screen around 16.26.

From what I can tell from the logging, the machine rebooted at 16.26.16:

Code: Select all

#Dec 15 16:26:16 mburns-ThinkPad-T500 kernel: Kernel logging (proc) stopped.
#Dec 15 16:26:16 mburns-ThinkPad-T500 rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="4.6.4" x-pid="577" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] exiting on signal 15.
#Dec 15 16:27:09 mburns-ThinkPad-T500 rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="4.6.4" x-pid="555" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] (re)start
What I find odd is that the time "jumps" at certain moments, here:

Code: Select all

#Dec 15 16:25:59 mburns-ThinkPad-T500 kernel: [ 64.937000] userif-2: sent link up event.
#Dec 15 16:25:59 mburns-ThinkPad-T500 kernel: [ 197.986618] wlan0: deauthenticating from 00:25:9c:14:b8:c8 by local choice (reason=3)
and here:

Code: Select all

#Dec 15 16:26:06 mburns-ThinkPad-T500 kernel: [ 198.221601] userif-2: sent link up event.
#Dec 15 16:26:06 mburns-ThinkPad-T500 kernel: [ 205.603632] ecryptfs_parse_options: eCryptfs: unrecognized option [ecryptfs_check_dev_ruid]
Both "jumps" are preceded by something called "userif-2", which is most likely a network-interface. I also see Network-Manager and vmware/virtualbox activities at the same time. It seems to me that there are multiple network-agents fighting over power which might be related to this?

Can you confirm that you only have 1 manager and/or script for your network, not multiple?

Can you please also post /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/secure from around the same time?

Regards,

Anakin
