Abort.

It wanted to remove practically everything so I aborted....guess I'll wait awhile before I install KDE 4.7.2....unles there's a way to do this without having all that being removed.......cheers

@Andrew :shock:

Read through it, can't see anything obvious, could you use synaptic/mintupdate to isolate which packages are causing the problem? Select them in batches, it will tell you when it has a problem so you can abort.

I haven't run into any issues getting updates with KDE 4.7.2 on LMDE, but then I've already jettisoned all of the GNOME packages I can safely get rid of so I've managed to avoid most of the "remove almost everything" updates.

(Love that userbar, Andrew. Would you mind if snagged it for my use here?)

Thankee! It will hold me over until I can figure out how to make my own userbar. After I get caught up on some other new laptop tasks, of course. Dear Tux, is there an end to that task list?

xircon.....I was only able to upgrade about 4 or 5 files, the rest involve removing basically the whole kde side of the OS...I've already taken out gdm3, gnome session manager and a few other gnome related files.....from previous warnings kde 4.7.2 could wreek havoc on the system....not real sure on that one though....any thoughts?....cheers

My guess would be there are still a few unupgraded packages. The 32bit and 64bit repos do not update simultaneously, nor do all the mirrors.

Just wait one or two days and try again.

Hey Greg,

Unfortunately, the 4 or 5 files I did upgrade, borked my system on my laptop....it boots fine and goes into the desktop, but the kde crashes and I get that idiot bug reporter box that doesn't work and a blck screen :(

@andrew, can you please post the output of

Code: Select all

for sure it will help us/you understand why that havoc in your system;
thank you

Hey zz:

Well, it wasn't kde, it was the plasma shell....basically I can't get to anything....I have a black screen.....no desktop background, no nothing except for when I reboot and the existing apps that were running when I restarted, open up and then ask to restore pages...like FF. I don't even have access to dolphin where my files are.....the only thing I see doing right now is re-installing LMDE....nothing else I can do unless someone has a suggestion....cheers

Well, I'm not running KDE and I haven't investigated your specific problem. But if you're open to general suggestions then I guess I'll offer one. You could hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 and drop into a terminal session and use apt-get to install another desktop environment (XFCE, GNOME, etc.). Then you could reboot and log into the new DE instead of KDE. You could use the system that way for as long as you like, and if you managed to fix KDE at some point you could go back to it. So I guess it would depend on how much you want to preserve your existing system and whether you'd rather just start over with a new KDE installation.

following on from Michael's post ....

sudo aptitude install xfce4

My favourite safety net.

:)

Then from an Xfce desktop open Synaptic and remove any 4.7 KDE files. Update Synaptic and either reinstall 4.6 or just wait and do an install of 4.7 when you can.

You could, very carefully, open up experimental and add 4.7 from there to ensure you get all the bits - but only if you are keen. Do not do any general updates with experimental open.

@ Michael & Greg:

Thank you both for your input....while I was waiting for responses, I reinstalled, went with stable, incoming & qt-kde experimental repos.....everything is back up and running, & no issues with anything. All my information previously thought to be wiped, is still here.....didn't lose one file, just a few tweaks to get some programs up to par.....I really appreciate all your input.....cheers

This morning's update to xserver-xorg-core is broken and will trash your system.

Google-chrome-unstable is also playing up, freezes my machine for long periods of time, with high disk activity, have dropped back to stable.

Cheers

@Andrew, here comes the backup preacher  Backups prevents you from reinstall after a crash. I always recommend
qt4-fsarchiver - http://sourceforge.net/projects/qt4-fsa ... FDebian-6/ - it's very easy to use and fast.
Normally a backup once per week is good. But if there are suspect packages contained in an update, i make a fresh backup
before i install the update.

@Gerd, backs up OK, but I couldn't work out how to restore (as everything was in German), could you write a quick and dirty how-to?

Cheers Gerd, it is part German, part English. Just updated it and now it will not run :( Will record a video and post on this post. It was backing up...... but not now.

Video should be available here:
http://youtu.be/SFYgXvfAJ08

Don't think I am doing anything wrong/differently :?

:Edit2: This version appears to have better translations :)

:Edit3: Should have run from terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo qt4-fsarchiver
src/oper_save.c#960,filesystem_mount_partition(): partition [/dev/sda6] is mounted read/write. please mount it read-only
and then try again. you can do "mount -o remount,ro /dev/sda6". you can
also run fsarchiver with option '-A' if you know what you are doing.

Unlike Steve (I had xorg yesterday, had to reinstall Nvidia with smxi), everything went fine, and no problems.
