podagee,
we need more info in order to help you:
- i assume you installed the 32bit ver., at what point are you trying to install the PAE kernel? right after installation or after all the updates done?

- have you followed this http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=185&t=82346 after the installation?

- which howto have you followed? link pls

His lack of an adequate description makes me doubt that this is the tutorial author's fault... :lol:

This is not a tutorial.

Just my own standard way of installing PAE kernel.

use synaptic
search the kernel.. that ended with pae, and its associated headers.
mark them
click Apply

watch synaptic do its work.
and usually ended up OK.

this 9-yr old compaq desktop is running pae as below

Code: Select all

lmde32g wayne # uname -r
3.1.0-1-686-pae
lmde32g wayne #

have you already installed UP3 per the link i gave above?
if so, the PAE kernel should be installed in the update, unless for some reason the UP was not finished;
copy&past the output of

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
and also

Code: Select all

inxi -r

okay honestly im about to quit all mint projects.this is honestly insane to get this up and running correctly.running 3.0.0-1 486 kernel.....NO processor difference as i am still with 486.my original post was how to get both processors working not for update pack 3.
any real help to my first post would be greatly appreciated.

once you finish the update to UP3 the PAE-kernel is installed automatically, replacing the 486 that was default in the iso;
either you do the updates and get the new kernel, or... it's up to you.

okay after updates i still have the 2,6,xx486 kernel and now im with the 3.0.0-1 486 kernel no upgrades there.
i ran the dist-upgrade and itr says 1 not upgraded.
it didnt come in the update so what now?
i tried installing it from the synaptic,but,nothing....still have one processor.
what now?

search in synaptic for

Code: Select all

linux-headers-2.6-686-pae
and

Code: Select all

linux-headers-3.0.0-1-686-pae
and mark them for installation (just watch if anything is marked to removal - it shouldn't, but it won't hurt be sure)
