LXDE 12 RC : USB wireless adapter TL-WN822N works well now

Post by barakatax »

Dear All,

Thank you very much to Linux Mint LXDE Devs for the long awaited LXDE release.
I am planning to permanently install Mint LXDE on my HP mini netbook.
Just now, I tried the LXDE - RC through live USB and found that my wireless usb adapter TP Link TL-WN822N doesn't work.

The adapter recognized via lsusb:

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 005: ID 0cf3:1002 Atheros Communications, Inc. TP-Link TL-WN821N v2 [Atheros AR9001U-(2)NG]

Bus 003 Device 002: ID 03f0:171d Hewlett-Packard Wireless (Bluetooth + WLAN) Interface [Integrated Module]
But it never connect to the internet.
Then I checked folder /lib/firmware, here is the result:

Code: Select all

We can see that there are two firmware driver, they are:

Code: Select all

ar9170.fw
and

Code: Select all

carl9170-1.fw
According to : http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/ar9170 explained that:
"ar9170usb is a GPL driver for the Atheros 802.11n USB chipset (AR9170). This driver is deprecated and it was deleted on Linux 3.0, replaced by carl9170."

I am not the expert, but I think this duplicated driver make my usb wireless does not work. I also tried Lubuntu 12.04 Beta 1 and experienced that the usb wireless works. And there was only carl9170 in folder /lib/firmware.

carl9170 newest driver explained here : http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drive ... Firmware-1

CMIIW as I am only guessing. I do really hope my wireless adapter work so I can install Mint LXDE on my netbook.
Thank you.

Re: LXDE 12 RC : USB wireless adapter TL-WN822N doesn't work

Barakatax,

That can be frustrating. It happened to me about a year ago.

What I did to solve. I downloaded every possible driver for my device (variants, os, 64 or 32) Each one in it's own folder. Each one would have 3 files, an .inf, a .cat and one other. From there I started testing them using ndiswrapper (System Tools-Wireless Drivers on Mint) until I found one that worked. Then I made sure to keep a copy of that folder handy.

I hope this works for you. Sorry if I couldn't be more concise.

Welcome to the Mint forums.

Hi Miami592,

Thank you very much for quick reply, sharing your experience and a warm welcome. :P
I am hoping that the LXDE Devs would like to remove:

Code: Select all

ar9170.fw
along with everything related to it. I am afraid if i delete it manually, it will break the system.
Just to repeat http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/ar9170 that ar9170 is obsolete for kernel 3.0 and above so it should be replaced by carl9170, not duplicated in folder /lib/firmware.

Since it's a RC it might be worth trying to remove it manually. If it breaks it can just be reinstalled.

As for the replacement or removal of obsolete drivers, perhaps you can sign up at the Mint community page and send a PM to clem and fredg. Clem is "the man" for mint and fredg is for the current LXDE.

Hope this helps,

Thanks M5,

I checked WattOS R5, the usb wireless adapter works well. I am quite sure that the duplicated driver cause the problem.
Hopefully someone can deliver this kinda problem to "the man" or Mr. Fredg (or other Devs team)
