UP4 no bash-completion, Cinnamon Cursor issue…[solved]

Post by timh »

I did a fresh install with ISO LMDE 201109 and on Friday update with UP4.

Now I loose bash completion. I tried to overwrite the new with the old one:

Code: Select all

sudo cp /etc/bash.bashrc.dpkg-old bash.bashrc
No luck - I get then errors in Terminal:

Code: Select all

bash: [: Zu viele Argumente.
bash: [: =: Einstelliger (unärer) Operator erwartet.
bash: [: Zu viele Argumente.
bash: [: =: Einstelliger (unärer) Operator erwartet.
I live now with that, because I need completion. the same errors if I copy int $HOME/.bashrc this:

Code: Select all

if [ -f /etc/bash_completion ]; then
    . /etc/bash_completion
fi
I found this errors in .xsession-errors:

Code: Select all

(gnome-settings-daemon:2443): updates-plugin-WARNING **: failed to get upgrades: GDBus.Error:org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._pk_5ftransaction_5ferror.Code4: GetDistroUpgrades not supported by backend

(cinnamon:2490): St-WARNING **: percentage lengths not currently supported

Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
gnome-session-canberra is installed

I installed a new cursor theme and it works only in some windows:
Firefox OK - in Nautilus only at hover over files or directories, on Desktop the same (only at hover…), not in menu or panel, pidgin only in message window. :?

Where can I change the main browser from epiphany to firefox? In the System Information there is no firefox to choose.
The new(Gnome3) open with for files sucks, I can only choose in a list from some progs. is not possible to put a command in. What Linus T. said: „…Interface <violates forum rules>…“ is correct

Another Problem:

Cinnamon takes in 10h 275MB memory, think this is to much.
Memory used: 605MB (Cinnamon 275MB)
I restart (ALT F2 r) Cinnamon Shell
Memory used: 598MB (Cinnamon 45MB)
There must be a leak, how can this be fixed?

*Completion: You could try by process of elimination to see what causes the problem.
But basically bash_completion belongs in ~/.bashrc or /etc/bash.bashrc - last one works for me at least.

*XSession errors: Doesn't seem too suspicous. I thought I solved the canberra problem by installing some libcanberra...

*For deeper system settings: You need to install gconf-editor or dconf-editor
mateconf-editor for MATE.

*Memory leak? Which process causes this?

Thank you, I installed it :)

I think Cinnamon, because it sucks a lot of memory even the PC still not work and running not another programs.
In 12 hours ~375MB is a lot, I remember there was something with Gnome-shell, it had that problem in the beginning.

Cinnamon is pretty hungry for resources I suspect. But which memory does it take? Are you looking at Virtual or Resident Memory?
I believe that it works as a shell and as the window manager. So maybe that's normal ...?

it takes resident mem.

I took a look with pmap, this is (short) output:

Code: Select all

tim@lmde ~/Desktop $ pmap -d 9346

There are some [ anon ] - I disable now the most extensions/plugins to get the hungry one ;)
I need some time to controll this.

The cursor issue I did a „dirty“ fix - renamed the DMZ-White directory. Now my cursor is working

Code: Select all

tim@lmde ~ $ sudo mv /usr/share/icons/DMZ-White /usr/share/icons/DMZ-White-disabled
The bash-completion is working but bash don't like the old /etc/bash.bashrc - it gives that error:

Code: Select all

bash: [: Zu viele Argumente.
bash: [: =: Einstelliger (unärer) Operator erwartet.
bash: [: =: Einstelliger (unärer) Operator erwartet.
bash: [: =: Einstelliger (unärer) Operator erwartet.
bash: [: =: Einstelliger (unärer) Operator erwartet.
bash: [: Zu viele Argumente.
bash: [: =: Einstelliger (unärer) Operator erwartet.
bash: [: =: Einstelliger (unärer) Operator erwartet.
bash: [: =: Einstelliger (unärer) Operator erwartet.
bash: [: =: Einstelliger (unärer) Operator erwartet.
bash: [: =: Einstelliger (unärer) Operator erwartet.

There is an error in the script, I think.
So this post is partly solved :)

I hope there is a fix in the next update. I have this version:

Code: Select all

tim@lmde ~ $ apt-cache policy bash
bash:
  Installiert: 4.2-1
  Kandidat: 4.2-1
  Versionstabelle:
 *** 4.2-1 0
        500 http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/ testing/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
Or should I switch to another repository?

Do you have the completion in both files? Have you tried it with empty conf files?

I've got the same version from the same source. On debian.org testing is a newer version which is installable without dependency problems (for me). But I don't think that would solve your problem.

Now - since a view weeks - I run Z-shell (zsh) and will never use bash/dash.
No problem with completion and this is a very good shell.
