Cinnamon fail to start due to an unexpected error

Post by lleiria »

OK, this is a new one!
Everything was running well, I was just trying to put to work "open as root" on MATE, editing mimeappas.lst. All was well and suddenly... I cannot start anymore cinnnamon. I got a screen with a computer icon and a message saying that the system couldn't load due to an unexpected error, that can not recover, please restart. But after I applied UP4, everything was well, so that's not an nvidia drivers problem... Ay ideas? MATE is running well.

Hi,

I am not very clear here.
You had a problem, then you restart and upgrade and now it is still OK?

What is your question then?

Ok, it's probably my bad english.
So:
1) I upgraded the system with UP4.
2) I had some minor problems; the upgrade didn't install linux headers, but i did it using the sgfxi script; it also updated the nvidia drivers.
3) everything was running: MATE, gnome-shell and cinnamon
4) I had a problem with "open as root", installed caja-gksu, but when I tried to open as root, the system tried to open with vlc.
5) I solved the problem editing mimeapps.lst, by axl's advice (thanks again!). That solved the problem on MATE (cinnamon, as far as I know, does not have that option);
6) Then, when I tried to login with cinnamon, I received that message: it's a screen with a computer icon and the message about teh unexpected error that cannot be recovered. That screen appears when I try to log with cinnamon or gnome-shell.
7) MATE load and run OK, but cinnamon and gnome-shell don't. I don't like gnome-shell, but I like cinnamon, and wished to use it.
8 ) I already reinstalled cinannmon, but the "unexpected error" persists: still don't let me log with cinnamon.

That's it!

have you checked the log on the time of the "unexpected error" it could give us some information on the problem.

You're welcome again but: All Desktop Environments use your home directory. So if Nautilus (which is the base for Caja) from Gnome 3/Cinnamon calls for the file and you can't recover it you could move/rename the file for starters. It should be re-created to system defaults automatically after Logout/Restart.

axl:
I think it was a coincidence and has nothing to do with changes on mimeapps.list. Anyway, I had already changed the inode line to natilus, instead of caja, and the problem persisted. I removed it, but the system did not create a new one, and anyway occurred the same problem.

FDF:

Here's the systemlog, triyng to login with gnome-shell:

Concerning line item # 2
It seems Nvidia has upgraded their drivers to 295.40 and when I installed them using smxi on one machine and sgfxi on the other, those drivers borked both systems. Screen refreshing was unbearable slow and Cinnamon would not start after the nvidia upgrade.

I restored from an earlier back that had the Nvidia 295.35 drivers and screen refresh is normal and cinnamon loads and runs correctly.

Thanks
