Wireless stopped working

Post by rcanalli »

Hi,

I'm having this problem on a friend's notebook running Linux Mint 12, who I'm trying to help, but I'm no expert.

The wireless network was working normally until some weeks ago when, with no apparent reason, it suddenly just ceased to work.

Wireless network icon shows "unavailable" in gray, so it just doesn't alow me to chance it to "available" or "on". It's the same when I go to network setting. Gray "off" button that I can't change to "on". Also "flight mode" indicator always starts "on". Here, I'm even able to change the flight mode to "off", but nothing happens. And if close the network setting window, when I reopen it, flight mode turned back to "on".

I've checked the on/off switch, and it's not the problem.

Below, the the results for the following ommands: lshw, lspci, lspci -vvnn, ifconfig -a, sudo lshw -C network, nm-tool and rfkill:

1. Result for lshw:

The To be filled by OEM.. is caused by not running that Linux command as root or sudo

Code: Select all

sudo lshw -c system
--or the whole list as you did
inxi -F
inxi -N
--would also be useful and more compact
Ubuntu 12, wireless problems that chipset ..

You can check test the wireless on the command line (bash shell: terminal)

Code: Select all

iwlist
iwconfig
--same as ifconfig but specific to wireless..
http://linuxhcl.com/browse/product?id=7480

iwconfig testing..

And you can reduce the size of your data display by inserting (pasting it into a (quote..(end) quote))
your data insert here

The rfkill output says the wifi is hard blocked. Please turn on the wifi switch (often a hidden switch at the front or side, a key combination with Fn, or a button above the keyboard).

rcanalli,

If AlbertP's suggestion doesn't work, it might be the result of a known bug: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.p ... 45681.html

I had a similar problem with rfkill indicated "hard blocked" but my netbook doesn't have a physical switch. What got the wireless back was booting into a older kernel (.32) then I could click "enable wifi." I happened to have an older kernel with the needed wifi drivers already on my computer. You might be able to get it working by running a live ditrobution with an older kernel.

Hi AlpertP.

Thanks for the tip, but I'd previously checked the on/off switch, and it's not the problem.

Hi OP.

I was having the same problem as you. I was trying all sorts of things, until it dawned on me that my laptop has a "hard" switch at the front for WiFi, but there is also a keyboard shortcut (in my case FN+F8) to enable/disable the Wireless connectivity.

Before pressing that key, rfkill wifi returned soft blocked = no, hard blocked = yes.

After I hit that combination, the result for rfkill wifi returned soft blocked = yes, hard blocked = no.

So after, I ran rfkill unblock wifi, and I was back in action.

Hope it helps :)
