It turns into a Debian login window if I follow altair4's steps, and the daemon reveals itself to be GDM... Okay, need to customize the picture also :)

Wow, what have you guys done to that poor login window  When I installed MATE 13 I set it to auto login, and no login needed :-) Is Cinnamon having issues?

Well, MDM is a fork of GDM (ol' Debian's GDM, Ubuntu dropped GDM for LightDM a long time ago).

That was a screenshot from Cinnamon, but it does the same on MATE. To be clear, this is with the Linux Mint theme removed (which doesn't show a user list).

Automatic login may be nice, but not if you have multiple users in your home, each with their own account. Or if you have an encrypted home folder

Wow! I might have found my new favorite Mint edition, Maya MATE! Been running it for a few hours now and it's darn near perfect. A pure MATE desktop like I always wanted. And everything works!

Kudos to the Team!

Thought for sure i would be going with Maya Mate edition but after trying both out. I much prefer my Maya with Cinnimon on top. Cinnimon has come along way since i first tried it out.

I am trying to install the 32-bit LM13RC Cinnamon on a Toshiba laptop with 2 GB RAM, a Celeron M CPU and video card is ATI Radeon Xpress 200M. After the screen of default language = English, I hit "Continue".

Then, the screen is a messed up view of horizontal black and gray bands. I can move the cursor arrow but that's all I can do for now. Nothing seems to occur next.

By the way, lspci -nnk shows the kernel drivers for video is "radeon" and "radeonfb". On this machine, I installed LMDE and LM12 without problems.

Please help! Thank you!

:(
I finally solved the problem as follows:

1. Insert CD to re-install LM13 and hit the spacebar;
2. Hit TAB key to edit bootcode: Add the following 3 codes after "boot=casper":
nomodeset
acpi=off
pnpbios=off (the last one is specifically for my laptop only)

3. Userid:mint
pwd: (BLANK)

4. Configure NM for wired connection

5. Hit Live Installer icon and follow screen prompt for the rest.

One thing that installation could be expedited is NOT to install language packs, especially if I have already selected English as my language choice.

I was literally slapped upside the back of my head once by an ex Marine Sys Admin for setting my machine up to auto login. For some reason I've never done it since. :)

Alright, so i have just installed Mint 13 "Maya" with the MATE desktop environment,
it works great so far but i have a few questions.

After installing i removed the Mint menu because i prefer the customized menu bar.
However when i go to places or the file manager i do not see the home folders (images, music, documents, videos, etc).

I know i can create shortcuts to them by dragging the folders the left panel but if i do that they will not show up in the 'Places' menu..

Is this a bug or something i'll have to modify myself?

Also when i boot up it loads the boot options but the text is huge, previously i could change this by going
to boot-options and change the resolution.

So far i can't find the option for this..

I had to install Startup Manager via Synaptic. It wasn't installed by default.

ok, 12 o'clock news
all day around with this maya-mate
upon boot, jockey fails (again) to install the broadcom 4312 driver (old issue afaik).
the usual ubiquity install and 74 updates (level 1-3), plus 6 more (new kernel) in level 4-5.

Mate came a long way since i first tried it (some months ago in lmde). when you login first time it's like mint9 or mint10, you can't tell the difference (and that's a good thing because that's mate role to keep that user-experience alive)

and one of the things people are going to ask is "and compiz?" my install today was an experiment to test it.

Code: Select all

zerozero@zerozero-Inspiron-1545 ~ $ inxi -SGx
System: Host: zerozero-Inspiron-1545 Kernel: 3.2.0-23-generic x86_64 (64 bit, gcc: 4.6.3)
Desktop: N/A Distro: Linux Mint 13 Maya
Graphics: Card: Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller bus-ID: 00:02.0
           X.Org: 1.11.3 drivers: intel (unloaded: vesa,fbdev) Resolution: 1366x768@60.0hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 8.0.2 Direct Rendering: Yes
the hardware is nothing special but always worked with compiz. this time it gave me a hard time
i have an (almost) functional compiz+emerald installation here, bth don't know exactly how (and don't know if could do the same again)
- i had to purge compiz
- install an older v.
not recommended in any way (of course others might have better stories)

final result (because without a screenie it never happened  )

I tried this, but it didn't work  . I added a Mark Shuttleworth line and it worked . Anyway, I really like the Cinnamon RC so far.

There's no "maya" repos on the Ubuntu servers. I think you need to replace that with "precise" or whatever the codename of the Ubuntu release is.

No problem with the 32-bit MATE iso.

Cinnamon works great on my old netbook, MATE can't be installed. MATE and Cinnamon wont install on my laptop
I just installed Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon on my Asus EeePC900. First I tried MATE, it shows the live desktop but during install the installer crashes :(

Cinnamon looks great and works fine. Besides Cinnamon Gnome classic / fallback is also installed.
Why MATE won’t install I haven’t figured out yet. I’ll try to do it this week.

A total different experience gave my Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M7400 laptop.
MATE live desktop shows op, during install the installer crashes ( again ). Then I started a live session using compatibilty mode, now I end up in text mode, X-server not configured :(

Then I tried Cinnamon, it gave me a total blank live desktop, installing is not possible. Compatibility mode gave me the same experience as with MATE :( When Mint 13 becomes final I’ll try to upgrade to Mint 13 ( it is now running Mint 12 )

Unlike Ubuntu 12.04 Linux Mint supports non PAE processors.

That doesn't surprise me
Try not starting the live desktop, just run the installer.
