I get this:

apa@nakedpc ~ $ sudo apt-get -t unstable install libgegl-0.2-0 libbabl-0.1-0
Reading package lists... Done
E: The value 'unstable' is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources
apa@nakedpc ~ $

I have installed gimp from debian experimental and it works fine. Before installing gimp from experimental, jut install libgegl-0.2-0 and libbabl-0.1-0 from unstable.

Code: Select all

apt-get -t unstable install libgegl-0.2-0 libbabl-0.1-0
After that you can do

Code: Select all

apt-get -t experimental install gimp
This command pulls in all the dependencies from the experimental branch. The command that you have used pulls in just gimp and not the dependencies like gimp-data, libgimp2.0.

gychang,
you are using the main ed. (maya), the instructions in this topic are for lmde (debian), follow this http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=101517

Hopefully no one downloads Gimp from the post above this one. Always stick to repos or build from sources.

Gimp 2.8 is in Debian testing. No need to compile.

http://packages.debian.org/search?suite ... words=gimp
wheezy (testing) (graphics): The GNU Image Manipulation Program
2.8.0-2: amd64 armel armhf i386 ia64 kfreebsd-amd64 kfreebsd-i386 mips mipsel powerpc s390 s390x sparc
sid (unstable) (graphics): The GNU Image Manipulation Program
2.8.0-2: alpha amd64 armel armhf hurd-i386 i386 ia64 kfreebsd-amd64 kfreebsd-i386 mips mipsel powerpc s390 s390x sh4 sparc
2.6.11-5 [debports]: sparc64

For other apps that may be in sid but not testing you can do:

Code: Select all

echo 'APT::Default-Release "testing";' >> /etc/apt/apt.conf, edit sources.list, copy your non-security testing lines and change one set to sid, then apt-get update. Use apt-get -t sid install foo; to install foo from sid rather than testing as usual. WARNING to SYNAPTIC users: Synaptic ignores Default-Release: set Preferences->Distribution

I built it from testing so it should be the same but I thought it might save some people the trouble of adding extra repos. It's not in the the latest snapshot as of when I built the packages. Not sure if it's in the incoming repo or not but I don't think it is. Those packages have no modifications to source code or anything of that nature and were built using the backport function. @Craigevil I know you mean well but I was just trying to help others. I have been thinking about building a repository of various stuff I backport but cannot remember the tool I used to do this with. Automatically assuming packages are dangerous is not very nice and quite frankly made me feel a bit unwelcome.

Actually automatically assuming a package is safe is dangerous not the other way around. One of the reasons Debian/LMDE is safer than Windows is because it uses safe repos. Rather than searching the web and downloading random packages.

Your package is probably quite safe, but it is still not the smart or Debian way.

I would say the same for pretty much anyone that posts a package for download, other than Clem and a few of the mods that have been around forever.

Out of 1880 installed packages, I have 9 that were either manually installed or built from sources. Every other package comes from "official" Debian repos or the Debian Multimedia repo.
The 7 packages are:
oracle-j2re1.6 downloaded from Oracle and built using java-package
oracle-j2re1.7 downloaded from Oracle and built using java-package
skype
teamviewer7
dnscrypt-proxy from OpenDNS
ufw GUI for kde built from source , http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=137789
jitsi downloaded from https://jitsi.org/
konq-kim - image service menu for Konqueror from the sidcution repo
ceni - Curses interface to /etc/network/interfaces from the siduction repo

Ok, I normally just use sources from SID to use the official backport command instead of dipping into for a apt like some others do. I felt it was safer then have it grab a ton a dependencies from the SID repo.

this thread is difficult to follow for this newbie.

Is there a concise step that I can follow that will install Gimp 2.8 on my latest LMDebian (cinnamon)? I have uninstalled the 2.6 but having difficulty setting it up correctly.

thanks,
