NEED MAJOR HELP!

Post by flightfreak123 »

ok, so I am new to linux and linux mint, I downloaded it because of the speed, and lack of viruses, ok, so I started the installer and it gave me 2 options and no run side by side option eventually, delete every os but mint, or do somthing else, I wanted windows, so I pressed do somthing else, it gave me some screens full of hard drive spaces or somthing I didn't know. I did some random clicking with no avail, so I clicked back...thats when it all went downhill :( linux crashed..it said somthing along the lines of kernel can not handel somthing. I restarted my computer, and tried to run it, but it just kept doing the termanal blick, so I rebooted linux, and tried to install it again. It gave the same installer, but now it thinks there is another version of linux on this computer I pressed install side by side, not knowing anything else to do, it is now downloading. I NEED WINDOWS BACK! I don't care if I have to uninstall linux or not, but I need the ability to go on my old windows 7! I AM FREAKING OUT! I need help! I would even be willing for an expert to take control of my computer, or do a step by step live video call with me! ANYTHING TO GET MY WINDOWS BACK!

Flightfreak,

Where have you got to now?
Think about the "undo" before you "do".

If you open a terminal and type
sudo update-grub
This will list all OS's on your drives and should list Windows. If so, just reboot and select Windows from the Grub boot menu.
If Windows fails to boot then more info is needed. You should download and run this http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/ and post the results here insode code tags.

When it asks you for a password just type it in, then enter. It won't show anything as you type for security reasons.

so what do I do?! I'm freaking out!
Ok this is my final option senario. No linux, with Windows 7 home premium with 64 bit. Nothing is on it, everything has been reset, but I will not tolerate it if it makes the system slower

This is a painful situation. I presume Windows 7 was the first partition on your 500GB disk. Unfortunately, this partition has been reformatted for linux. It may be possible to get some files back using a program called "testdisk". I am not an expert in data recovery so you may have to wait for one to come along. You probably won't have to wait long.
You might get more hits if you post in the Ubuntu forums (Mint is a tweaked Ubuntu). The Ubuntu forums have many more members.

I had a big save with the following app after GRUB lost my Win7 after my dumb mistakes changing the config file. The original poster seems to have given up here, but it might help others.

Ok, but for an MBR problem, and this is a common type of complaint with Grub and some later windows OS versions, a standard method is simply to reinstall a msdos or windows boot

Code: Select all

fdisk /mbr
http://www.computerhope.com/fdiskhlp.htm
http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/m/mbr.htm
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000175.htm

http://www.ambience.sk/fdisk-master-boo ... fixmbr.php
--for some windows OS, a slight different utility is needed.

Or there is always a windows recovery console available, if you plan for it..
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 61858.aspx

And for any windows OS, you have to consider that there might be an issue on booting, either because of corruption or a missing file (NTLDR)
--lots of items with those type of troubles..
