NVIDIA 302.17 conflicts with 'mate-settings-daemon'

Post by tee33 »

Hi everyone,
after updating to Nvidia 302.17, mate-settings-daemon suddenly won't start. For instance, trying to change the desktop background gives this message:

Code: Select all

Unable to start the settings manager 'mate-settings-daemon'.
Without the MATE settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with DBus, or a non-MATE (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the MATE settings manager.
Going back to the old driver (295.40) magically solves the problem, so it's clearly caused by 302.17.

I also tried the solution from this thread, http://forums.mate-desktop.org/viewtopi ... t=175#p642 , to no avail.

Has anyone else experienced this issue, and possibly found a solution?

Running Linux Mint 13 Maya, MATE,
Graphics: Card: NVIDIA G72M [Quadro NVS 110M,
X.Org: 1.11.3 drivers: nvidia (unloaded: fbdev,vesa,nouveau) Resolution: 1440x900@60.0hz,
GLX Renderer: Quadro NVS 110M/PCIe/SSE2 GLX Version: 2.1.2 NVIDIA 302.17.

I have the same problem on Arch Linux - I think it's something to do with the new xrandr support.

Code: Select all

The program 'mate-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 177 error_code 2 request_code 153 minor_code 30)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I think you could be on to something. With 302.17 installed, color management doesn't work.
I use dispcalGUI and gnome-color-manager and am unable to get icc profiles or load corrections. With the previous driver it worked properly.
Though how to tell if the fault lies with Nvidia, MATE or xrandr? Any ideas?

Are you able to use the colour correction in NVidia X Server Settings?

Hi again.
Yes, I can both adjust and apply color correction in NVidia X Server Settings.

Oks it took me some time but i manage to fix it for now...

start gconf-editor, then open / -> apps -> gnome_settings_daemon -> plugins -> xrandr in it and disable flag "active".

Just do this

1.- mateconf-editor
2.- open apps /mate_settings_daemon/plugins/xrandr
3.- disable the flag because it should appear as active
4.- voila it should work right now ;)

I had the same problem with freshly installed Linux Mint 17.1 mate and nvidia drivers 331. The steps to fix the problem:

1) Install dconf-tools package to get the dconf-editor.
2) Run dconf-editor.
3) Find two entries for xrandr - one under gnome, other under mate and disable them.
4) Restart.

Thanks!
