Hi there!
As also stated by the user "bkidwell" in the comments of this guide:
http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/919
The Compiz "Place Windows" plugin is very buggy. If the "Smart" placement method is chosen, then the movement of a window to another desktop (for example using strg+alt+shift+arrow-key) is very glitchy and doesn't work or the window is moved somewhere else then you want.
I also tried the placement method "Pointer". With this the movement of a window does seem to work, but when switching between desktops, sometimes the windows get moved (without command to do so) inside the desktop inside the target desktop.
Another Mate + Compiz problem is that the context menues sometimes stay empty at first, and only when you move the mouse over them the options apear (because they have to be redrawn because of the hover effect)

Re: Mint13 + Mate + Compiz --> buggy
since my post got about 80 views but no one answered, maybe I should formulate concrete questions:
Is there somewhere someone who is feeling responsible for the mate desktop with compiz and maintaining it for the mint 13 release?
What are the suggestions from the linux mint maintainers for a desktop environment?
Since there are dvds including mate and cinnamon I guess its those two, but are you suggesting to just use mate without compiz? In my opinion mate without compiz has a very "dusty" feeling to it, and therefore I think compiz is the biggest argument for a gnome2 / mate environment.
Cinnamon is also a very nice desktop, but since it's support for multiple monitors is extremly buggy and crashes on nearly every change, and is not able to recover by running "cinnamon --replace" in half the cases, I don't think its usable on notebooks that you need for presentations via a beamer (except maybe by using mirroring displays, this seems to work even in cinnamon, but this is not my preferred method)
Can somebody help me get in contact with maintainers of those projects that I might be able to help resolve those issues?

Re: Mint13 + Mate + Compiz --> buggy
Another issue I have with mate + compiz --> incredible ammount of background activity without me doing anything.
When I'm running a cinnamon session, this is much better, and I get down to ~2% cpu usage if I don't do anything
