Not here, unfortunately. There's definitely something wrong with font rendering. Some applications just look bad. See the attached images. The up4.jpg image is from my old setup with Update Pack 4 and up5.jpg is from a clone of that setup on another partition, upgraded to Update Pack 5. The positioning of the characters is off on UP5.
Other than that, it feels like the whole font rendering is 'faint' somehow. On close inspection of the screen there doesn't seem to be any real difference, but that's the overall impression I get when I look at the screen.

More madness: my old preferences for screen shots are ignored. Actually, I can't even set them. Press Alt+PrintScreen and the screen shot is dumped somewhere, without any message and with an English name instead of a localized one. I eventually found it in my pictures directory, which is NOT where I want a screen shot I need to work with!

With regard to what I wrote earlier about the illegible white on grey text in the logon dialogue window: this morning when I booted the UP5 partition, I was greeted with an entirely different dialogue box, with white on black text. It had a Gnome Shell look and feel. No idea where that came from, but the useless dialogue box is gone, so no more complaints there. :D

Edit: well, that didn't last long. The useless dialogue box is back. Time to get rid of some more linuxmint overrides...
Which reminds me, the overrides system should be changed to check whether the files it wants to overwrite have been modified by the user. Bluntly destroying peoples' own settings is not done.

Hello, what can I do with this?

"The nvidia driver that is being installed (version 302.17) does not match the nvidia kernel module currently loaded (version 295.20).

The X server, OpenGL or GPGPU applications may not work properly.

The easiest way to 'fix' this is to reboot the machine once the installation has finished. You can also stop the X server (usually by stopping the login manager, e.g. gdm3, kdm or xdm), manually unload the module (rmmod nvidia) and restart the X server."

To complete my previous report, I realized now that "gnome-screenshot" does not work anymore.

gnome-screenshot

** (gnome-screenshot:3515): WARNING **: Unable to use GNOME Shell's builtin screenshot interface, resorting to fallback X11. Error: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.Shell was not provided by any .service files
roger@lmde64:~$

Before the UP5, I used to trigger it with Fn + End

Edit: As every LMDE user, I can use : mate-screenshot, and mate-screenshot -i to have the Preferences panel. So, it's not a real problem.

After upgrade from UP4 to UP5 cinnamon itself will not start, I get the following error:

cinnamon: error while loading shared libraries: libcogl.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

when started from a terminal. On normal load I get a desktop with no menu bar or window title bars ie no cinnamon.

The installed libcogl is libcogl.so.9 which came in with the UP5 package upgrades.

The base cinnamon version is 1.4.0-lmde2UP3 with libmuffin 1.0.3-UP2-lmde1.

I have tried upgrading both libmuffin and cinnamon to the very latest versions compiled from source ie cinnamon_1.5.2 and libmuffin 1.0.6 but get the same error.

Found this which suggests an issue with debian for this package but no-one else who has upgraded (so far at least) seems to have had this issue:

http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/?p=190#comment-2745

Used this http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/955 to compile the latest versions of libmuffin and cinnamon from source.

The initial install used the repos described in post 1 ie modified incoming, and other than the compiling from source libmuffin and cinnamon everything is UP5 lmde.

Any ideas on how to resolve this and get cinnamon to start?

Wow, not adding "incoming" to the apt list more or less screwed my install.

Love how it half-upgraded my system anyway, left me with a broken gdm, no MATE, and a hodgepodge of missing software.

Guess I'm glad to be reinstalling my OS with an SSD this week... maybe I should just move to regular 'ol Debian.

hmmm, curious those 'user' problems. And to think that warnings about "incoming" are in the opening message, how is a person to know.

The problem was that I saw a bunch of updates ready for me and I simply let them go. Come to find out the incoming repo wasn't there and caused all sorts of problems. I think my apt sources were left over from an early upgrade of UP4? I'm not entirely sure.

I got everything back into working order after a couple hours it was just somewhat frustrating. There wasn't any warning about UP5 being ready, so this all just caught me off guard.

Switched back to kernel 2.6.38-2. Again. The recent kernels keep producing the corruption I mentioned here, be it to a lesser extent than before.

The kernel that came with UP5 (3.2.0-3) also causes the CPU to heat up much faster. It used to be around 40ºC when the machine was idle and now it's mostly above 50º. Reminds me of the high power consumption problem of last year. I thought that was fixed?

I'm getting this error:

Code: Select all

Failed to fetch http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/multimedia/pool/main/v/vlc-dmo/vlc-plugin-notify_2.0.2-dmo3_amd64.deb: Hash Sum mismatch

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD

I suppose you ran "apt-get update"?
This sometimes happens when the archive is updated. Some packages are new while others are not and apt verifies the new packages with old hashsums. Hence the error message.

I propose to wait until tomorrow and try again.

You probably just had a partial upgrade.
So I still recommend to wait a while (I know that's hard) and try again later.

I also found a forum mentioning this problem so maybe this will help you further: http://askubuntu.com/questions/119298/a ... m-mismatch

My install seems to be mostly hosed right now, as the upgrade process removed cinnamon but didn't re-install it. My upgrade was only partial, due to a ton of unresolvable dependency issues (ran 'apt-get update' like 100 times). Drilling down using aptitude, a lot of them seem tied to "libfontconfig1" being outdated for the held packages, but running 'apt-get install libfontconfig' informs me that I have the latest version! I've rebooted a few times too, the issue persists. Kinda weird that no-one else has this problem, suggesting that it's not actually an issue with the repo (I'd be amazing if they'd released the UP with broken dependencies!). Should I go ahead and start with the --force flag, or should I wait it out? I'm not 100% comfortable with aptitude, so I'd prefer to use apt-get if I can.....

*sigh* This reminds me of when my Arch install comitted suicide, but at least LMDE didn't total the X server lol

In order to retain all my packages (mate, gnome, lxde) but cinnamon, i had to update by hand:

From Debian Testing: libfontconfig1, fontconfig-config
From Ubuntu Archive: libindicator6 so i could reinstall: mate-indicator-applet

Everything works fine. I kept my bash.bashrc (i like mint-fortune). Only thing missing from debs: linuxmint-login.wav

@chemicalfan
These repositories are here for testing purposes only. Things are likely to go wrong.
I suspect that the repositories are updated and so part of them are old and others new (see my previous post).

It's good practice to make an image of your system before upgrading with these repositories (Clonezilla: http://clonezilla.org/downloads.php).

About your issue, try these:

Code: Select all

apt-get -f install
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade
If that doesn't solve your problem, you can try downloading the package and install manually:
http://packages.debian.org/search?keywo ... ontconfig1

Good luck!

@chemicalfan,

@miguel~1.mx,
how exactly your repos look like?
they have to be like this

Code: Select all

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com debian main upstream import incoming
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/multimedia testing main non-free
specially note the new incoming session in the first line

with this said i find odd that after

Code: Select all

apt update && apt dist-upgrade
you still have issues with the font-related libs

Code: Select all

zerozero:~$ apt policy libfontconfig1 fontconfig-config
libfontconfig1:
  Installed: 2.9.0-6
  Candidate: 2.9.0-6
  Version table:
 *** 2.9.0-6 0
        700 http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian/incoming amd64 Packages
        500 http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/ testing/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     2.8.0-2.1ubuntu3 0
        700 http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian/upstream amd64 Packages
fontconfig-config:
  Installed: 2.9.0-6
  Candidate: 2.9.0-6
  Version table:
 *** 2.9.0-6 0
        700 http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian/incoming amd64 Packages
        500 http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/ testing/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     2.8.0-2.1ubuntu3 0
        700 http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian/upstream amd64 Packages
both those packages are in the incoming session

Thanks for the hint, I'd kind of assumed that the incoming repo would have all the required packages (in fact, I'd assumed it would be a direct mirror of Wheezy at the moment, considering the freeze). I'll try to grab libfontconfig from Wheezy to see if I get any luck that way.

Thanks for your advice Schoelje (why isn't there rep here? Or multi-quotes?! lol), I know it's testing and things might/will break, I was gambling on more stability than Arch but hey-ho. At least I knew the breakage was coming, lol! I probably should use clonezilla, at least before taking on a UP. That said, I don't mind fixing a broken system, I kinda like the challenge. Plus, breaking things is part of testing! I'm disappointed if the repo's aren't syncronised to all be up-to-date at the same time (so all packages are the desired versions), but in any case it should fix itself in time (with subsequent apt-get updates)

I'm hoping I don't have to download every package dependency manually, it's a bit Slackware lol! I don't mind too much though, it's only once in a blue moon. Is there a formalised process for reported broken dependencies, if this problem persists tonight?

Edit: Nice, didn't know about the ninja-watch feature! @Zerozero, I'll have to check that tonight, I set my sources up as the sticky thread suggests (can't find atm), so it depends what that thread says! lol

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD

Post by zerozero »

@ chemicalfan,
the sticky howto was already updated to reflect this new layout

regarding libindicator6:
- i guess that package is now deprecated in testing;
- i still have it installed (and surely didn't grab it from the ubuntu archives)

Code: Select all

zerozero:~$ apt policy libindicator6
libindicator6:
  Installed: 0.4.1-2
  Candidate: 0.4.1-2
  Version table:
 *** 0.4.1-2 0
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
but it doesn't appear nowhere in the debian's ftps
http://packages.debian.org/search?suite ... bindicator
(well it does but only in sid and for sparc64)
the new upstream libindicator lib is 0.5.0-1 (atm)
http://packages.qa.debian.org/libi/libindicator.html
http://packages.qa.debian.org/libi/libi ... 3914Z.html
so probably this dependency should be "fixed"

Code: Select all

zerozero:~$ apt rdepends libindicator6
libindicator6
Reverse Depends:
  mate-indicator-applet
(last thing we want is users d/ling random ubuntu libs :D )
Locked
