Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - tracking TESTING - updated 15 May
Good news. It turns out I'm not dead in the water after all. I completely forgot that I can boot into an older kernel, complete with my beloved GUI. Now I'm back up, and with 'net, I'm on the hunt for what killed X. I'm starting with doing a reinstall of the Nvidia drivers. I'll post updates when I find a workable solution.
@mockturtl:
You got a different list than I got, and I don't see the linux-headers that I think raped the poor pooch.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - tracking TESTING - updated 15 May
Qapla'! It turned out the phrase that paid was I can't tell y'all how nice it is to be back up and running with the GUI.
Note to self: Stop upgrading with sudo apt-fast dist-upgrade. Apt-get seems to work more reliably, especially with the testing repos.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - tracking TESTING - updated 15 May
That's the RPITA, Zero. I'm really surprised they made new kernels available when major graphics card drivers don't build against them. I'd run that phrase that pays before you reboot. It could save you a lot of time and aggravation. I lost over ah hour trying to beat it into submission, and that's 60+ minutes of my life I'll never get back. .

Gentlemen,
I've been using smxi/sgfxi to install updates and Nvidia drivers for a long time now and it has never let me down yet. I got the new kernel update today and when smxi was finished with the install I got the following message:
You could say: "Where's the fun in that?" I guess I'm just to old for that sort of fun anymore.
Anyway, I highly recommend using smxi/sgfxi to handle updates.
P.S. If you've never visited their website before, don't be put off by it's simple looks. Once again: Highly recommended.

I think I may need to give it a shot after yesterday's "adventure." Glad you were able to get your upgrade done pain free.GeneBenson wrote:Gentlemen,

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - tracking TESTING - updated 15 May
Fair warning: I saw there were 51 upgrades available today and fired up Synaptic to check the changelogs and noticed some Nvidia upgrades waiting for me.
I'm about to pull the trigger in my Konsole to start the upgrades (with apt-get, not apt-fast after Monday's adventure) and will report how things go.
On a side note, it turns out my missing thumb drives were in fact in the bottom of my bag. I must have missed the pocket when I put them back in at CVS on Sunday and didn't see them until last night. The good news is that if the pooch needs to look for the bobbys again I can grab a LiveUSB if I have to. I'm really hoping one of these kernel upgrades let my Katia (laptop) use my external hard drive again, but that's an adventure for another thread.
Update: I did a relog and a reboot with no complaints from Nvidia, which let the pooch relax. Until he remembered about that cat, of course. I am noticing that Firefox has a new icon in my Fancy Tasks, although the app menu still shows the right icon.
I tried changing my icon set and resetting it to my usual MIB-Ossigeno-Icons and even closing Fx, changing icons and restarting the browser, but the wrong icon still shows up on my panel. I'm wondering if this misbehavior will correct itself with a reboot but I'd rather not reboot again for now.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - tracking TESTING - updated 15 May
I don't usually have Nepo enabled but I turned it on to check it, and yesterday I had to disable it again. It pegged the hell out of my CPUs and killed the RCI. It's unfortunate because I was liking having so much information searchable but it wasn't worth losing the that. I didn't realize how much I use that until I couldn't use it at all.zerozero wrote:please check if nepomuk/strigi is working properly (was buggy when 4.8.4 entered sid)
Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - tracking TESTING - updated 15 May
I thought I'd be clever and snag the new cinnamon release (1.4.0-lmde2UP3) from LMDE incoming, but after a reboot and kernel housekeeping (remove 3.2.0-1; install new 3.2.0-3 headers) cinnamon won't start on either my 32-bit or 64-bit test box.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - tracking TESTING - updated 15 May
Thanks zero. I did my morning du and did indeed see that. My first reaction was, "Oh really???" and checked my inbox to see if there was an update to this thread about it. Props for having the answer ready for us before we even knew to ask the question.
Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - tracking TESTING - updated 15 May
Hello all,
i just reinstalled my lmde xfce to play a little bit with btrfs. Well, yesterday tried to point the repos to testing and did an aptitude dist-upgrade. Now the update manager shows some packages to update but i get a warning suggesting that if i proceed essential packages will be removed. Any ideas about how to fix it?
Thanks
