can you check please if all the dep are installed and matching the latest version?

if it wasn't pulled as a dep i think that gir1.2-muffin-3.0 is missing.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's what the problem was.
I downgraded back to 1.4, I'll mess with it more another day lol.

ok, i see that there's some dependencies issues adding the ppa and upgrading (only if you are using mint), so in order to avoid that we better go this way
add the ppa

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly

now edit the preferences file in order to give the ppa's the same weight as the mint packages

gksu gedit /etc/apt/preferences

and add this rule

Package: *
Pin: origin ppa.launchpad.net
Pin-Priority: 700

close the file and we can

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

I broke Cinnamon as well, downgraded to 1.4, and then tried this, which was successful. I'm now at 1.5.7.

I installed Mate in the interim though, and it's dramatically faster on my netbook. It has a few UI theme inconsistency issues, but otherwise it's very stable.

Sorry to jump in, but if you are worried about speed you could try xfce - its very similar to mate except it's lighter.

Another user here, I went the same way, and yes, it looks much healthier now
